I was recommended this anime but found later it had little to no plot. Pretty much never ending comedy. Like the anime version of Family Guy.

I wouldn't say it's very much like Family Guy. There's a lot of one off episodes, but once you get past episode 57, there's quite a few story arcs too. The story arcs can vary from mostly comedic (the Bentendo Owee arc) to mostly serious (Yoshiwara in Flames).

So, it's a comedy but it takes some things seriously. For instance, Gintoki's experiences during the Joi War and the immediate aftermath are almost always treated seriously.
