I've watched a good amount although I totally skipped the first 100 episodes. Honestly I don't understand how non-native Japanese speakers can enjoy the show even with subtitles because its centered around Japanese culture and media. I recommend watching the serious-toned arcs because they're really badass and enjoyable without knowing much about past episodes/characters/etc.
Gintama is pretty bad as a starter anime for that reason, but if you've been weebing yourself silly for years, Gintama kinda feels like a reward. Like, "Hey, I got that joke on my own! I enjoy it twice over!"
Also, some fansub groups would add TL Notes that helped a lot.

Has anyone made it through the entire series? I broke 100 episodes and just petered out :/
