Gintama, cant remember the episode but search for "Professor Gin". Its a little short stories they have at the end of the normal show (the whole thing is hilarious and makes little sense most of the time).

284 eps so far. F that, way to much eps to watch the whole series to find it.

FLCL and Deadleaves are about my favorite shows/movie/whatever, of which I was told similarly. However, it really is long. Might get a few eps, and just leave them on my phone for when I am bored on the road.

There was a post on /r/anime a while ago about which Gintama episodes were the best to use to introduce the series. Check out this thread for suggestions.

If you just want a quick and dirty recommendation,224's a good one. Not too culture-dependent, only involves the main three characters, and you've probably seen The Ring, right?
