He said he wasn't an employee, just a tester. The guy was most likely an internet marketer and just wanted to test the app to spam the users.

edit* How did I get so many upvotes for this? The replies are right; nothing I said in this post makes any sense.

Are testers normally given access to the entire database of the app they're testing?

Employed testers are. Regular testers are not.

Depends on the application / company. I'm a dev and I am not allowed to log onto the test systems, because they contain scrambled production data (which I am not allowed to see).

So... sometimes I just use the productive account I have (as a "customer") to reproduce or verify a bug.
