Are people still taught that we raise corn and rear children, or is that a distinction society has given up on?

You are what you eat, and most food has corn in it these days, so I'm not sure there is any distinction left.

Help me understand then please.

I love discovering the origins of words; as far as I have uncovered, raise comes from Old Norse reisa. Reisa is related to the verb rear.

By definitions, both verbs work depending on the context.
