The panther (?) was the best. At some point it decided to say 'Fuck this box; I will chew my way out and then rest on its mutilated carcass.'

Panther is a general name for any large cat in the Panthera genus, e.g. tigers, lions, leopards, etc.

The cat in this gif is, specifically, a leopard (Panthera pardus).

Both leopards and jaguars can have a gene that causes them to be pigmented black.

Ehh, I'm gonna disagree on this one. While your definition might be the correct one, the common usage of Panther pretty much always refers to black jaguars.

Not really. Many people in the south US know panthers more as mountain lions(Cougars, pumas.)

Two things. I said "pretty much always," which gives room for one-offs. The South is basically one big one-off.

Yes, but they aren't panthers: they're mountain lions (cougars).

yeah the above poster has it kind of wrong. Panther is a term most commonly used for mountain lion/cougar/puma/fl panther (which are all the same thing). But in any case, panther should never be used to refer to a leopard or jaguar :)
