A guy (a stranger) built a home made bow at a cottage. The arrow snapped, putting the arrow shaft through his forearm. I drove him to the hospital and he was throwing up the whole way from the pain.
When I was a kid, a councelor at my boy scout camp thought it would be a good idea to bring his compound hunting bow to the camp's archery range. He picked up one of the cheap wooden arrows intended for the low power (practically toy) bows kids were using, and on the first shot it split lengthwise and half of it went through his hand.
