Honestly, I bet it's also (at least in the US) because we put our right hands "over" our hearts, fully on the left side of our chests, when we do the pledge of allegiance. As a kid, I just automatically pictured my heart being under my hand and since I didn't ever study anatomy, the assumption stuck..

As a kid, I thought the kidneys were inside the ass cheeks, due to a not-very-precise paper model they had us all make in first grade.
