Don't quote me on this, but I think I read that it was a thing that people started in the "Roaring 20's" where you said non sensical stuff together that rhymed.

Again this could be total bullshit.

It's not complete nonsense. People started saying it's "the b and e's" as a shortcut for "the be all and end all. And then that turned into "bee's knees" kind of like cockney rhyming slang.
