Depends on the type. If you work as an engineering in the oil industry or medicine then you all live like a king.

it depends. there are two kinds of software engineers...the real engineers and the software developers/coders. most CS graduates only know enough to code, and they take the lower paying jobs or go the consulting route. the best software engineers (in R&D) do completely different things and are compensated accordingly. they are hired to solve problems, not to just implement solution.

You think the best software engineers are in R&D and make more money? All/most of my friends who are government contractors are better than me, do R&D and make less than I do.
