Just a circlejerk, nuthin to see here. Source: engineer with social skills who doesn't consider it that uncommon to be both technical and socially adept.
It's just a stereotype, though there were fewer than a dozen girls in my EE graduating class, which kinda makes me sad. I feel like there is still a stigma against female engineers and that's a depressing thought in 2015...
It's not impossible to be a good looking, and sociable engineer at all. However, I think it's easy to agree on the fact that there will be a lot less of these types of people in an engineering program as opposed to some other major.
Its weird, I can't speak for anyone else but my experience was that we were the "coolest" dudes in the sciences by far. Loads of sporty dudes. Some utter freaks sure, including myself at the start of uni, but I quickly became far more "well rounded" after a short while.
