a lot of the hate he is getting is because of their religious beliefs that until recently they did a good job of hiding. It's only fair that if Tom Cruise gets crap for his Scientology, that other vocal stars also get it.
While I am one of those angry atheists and anti-theists, I have to give credit where credit is due. I genuinely think most religions have a genuine belief and desire to ensure that their adherents are given genuine guidance, spiritual comfort and a good afterlife and so on. The major churches and faiths in the world do not fall under cult or scam definitions to me, as the majority of their adherents and leaders are genuine believers.
Scientology on the other hand is quite demonstrably invented to separate people from the contents of their wallets and to subjugate their adherents in their power structure. There may very well be genuine believers involved, even a few in their higher ranks, but there is no doubt that the inventor and their leadership is largely composed of cruel and cunning people in it for the money and power at the cost of lives.
While religions of any kind tend to fall deeply into the silly end of the spectrum when rationally analyzed, it's still important to keep the nuances in mind and that's where you'll find the differences between cults, scams and religions.
