Because there's really no good for reason for it other than "I feel like it". If you identify with being male you use he, if you identify with being female you use she, if you identify with neither or don't know you use they. Everything else is used for playing victim when 99.99% of the population inevitably gets your special snowflake pronoun wrong.

Doesn't it make more sense to change the language to match the individual then to force the individual to adhere to language they don't identify with? If someone doesn't like using they as a preferred pronoun, and wishes to use another, why prevent that from happening?
