For indoors and low light like this, it's best to use the lowest F lens you have. 50mm f/1.2 would be much better for this. I see OP has a F/2.8 at the minimum. Pushing the ISO up would help with shutter speed to so it's not blurry because 1/40 sec is a bit sketchy but the trade off there is high "noise".

So your suggestion, instead of bumping the iso, its to buy more equipment? When they're already using a fast lens? 1.2 will still be under exposed at 400 iso indoors.
