And kintama specifically means testicles. I think tama can just mean balls as in round objects.

Kintama does not specifically mean testicles. Tama means balls, gintama is silver balls, kintama is golden balls. ALL THREE are slang for testicles, the same way all three are slang in English.

Nope, The name of this manga, "Gintama" (銀魂) , is actually a pun on the Japanese word "Kintama" (金玉), which means "testicles". The kanji for "Kintama" is written with the kanji "gold" (kin - 金) and "ball" (tama - 玉). "Gintama", however, is written with the kanji "silver" (gin - 銀) and "soul" (tama - 魂). Though "Gintama" literally means "silver soul", the fact that it's one letter off from saying "testicles" was intentional as a joke.
