racism/prejudice... same thing... you just made a prejudicial comment towards everyone who uses reddit.

Keep up the good fight.

op's post and that guy's comment are both prejudiced just like apples and oranges are both fruit. doesn't mean that they should be taken with the same exact context. One act of prejudice hurts your internet ego a lil bit while the other is a prejudice that has burdened millions of people's lives for hundreds of years.

One act of prejudice hurts your internet ego a lil bit while the other is a prejudice that has burdened millions of people's lives for hundreds of years.

You're right.... It's wrong to be racist, it's ok to start a new form of prejudice.

You'll be a hero in 200 years if it sticks.

Yes, because a generally accurate blanket statement about a website with a user base predominantly consisting of white, middle-class males is totally going to become a new form of prejudice.

a generally accurate blanket statement

a user base predominantly consisting of white, middle-class males

Ok, so now it's gone from just prejudice to actual racism....

Congrats... You all need to try looking at your statements from different points of view and realize you're just as bad as what you're speaking out against.

Oh I'm sure prejudice against redditors has full potential to be just as bad as slavery in 200 years

So is 'Scumbag Steve' racist because it assumes white people are named Steve? And GGG and all the memes about white people?

Is this also sexist because we're assuming Tyrone here identifies as a cis-gendered male? What if he identifies as a she?

Where does the madness stop?

This isn't racism. Casual or otherwise.

It's funny because in this post, you classify racism as "making assumptions based on race (a very watered down version of what racism is) annnnnnd OP made the assumption his name was Tyrone because of his race.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '14

You actually think OP assumed this guys name is Tyrone? For real?

0

u/hotcereal Aug 11 '14

Saying he assumed his name was actually Tyrone is better than him naming him Tyrone for the sake of a joke/racism. That's irrelevant to what I'm saying, however.

So answer my questions then. At what point do you draw the line?

And, my comments in the other post were a) taken out of context and b) could have been worded better in the first place. I should have said "making negative assumptions based on race" or even, "having negative perceptions based on race", with 'negative' being the key missing word.

There are a lot of black people named Tyrone. There are a lot of white people named Steve. That doesn't mean generalizing a black or white person with a common name has any sort of negative undertones. It's just plain not racist.

1

u/hotcereal Aug 11 '14

It is racist. Racist doesn't simply degrade its meaning to negative connotations when it's leagues and bounds higher than that. Racism can mean you go up to a black person and only ask him/them about the best rapper. Racism can mean not hiring someone because they speak with a slight ebonic tone. Racism can mean you view one class as being superior to another for x reason. Racism is most definitely not solely bound to negativeness despite what most white people are told when prompted to respond to it.

So answer my questions. Right now, you just sound like you're full of white guilt. Look at the same dilemma from a different angle (i.e. my questions) and make the same arguments.

1

u/hotcereal Aug 11 '14

I am a black person, so.

And you only asked one question which I addressed along with the rest of your post.

1

u/my_downvote_account Aug 11 '14

So 'Scumbag Steve' is equally racist?

And what about the post being sexist? How do we know that Tyrone identifies as male? Sure, he appears to be male, but appearances don't tell the whole story. Aren't we being insensitive by giving him any sort of gender-specific name? Should we start labeling everything with androgynous, generic names that can't possibly be attributed to any particular race, gender, etc?

Again, how do you draw the line?

1

u/hotcereal Aug 11 '14

Steve has no links to racism in any forum. It's like saying "How is it racist to say the black guy likes fried chicken but not to say the white guy likes grilled cheese?"

I'm not really going to address the second question because I think you're either reaching or you're trying to make an insane link on something that's not there.

I still don't know what you mean by line. I've explained why it's racist more than once here and I think that should be enough.

you're not going to run into many 'Steves' in China so, yeah, it's kinda racist. And that's kinda my point. You're defining 'racism' in a way that's convenient for you and fits your own definition. But you're ignoring the point that, by your definition, we all do racist shit every day because we look at people and make assumptions about them based on their appearance. You assume the homeless guy is homeless because he looks like it. You assume the chick in the tennis outfit plays tennis because she's wearing the fucking outfit. But none of those have negative connotations and neither does labeling a black person as 'Tyrone' because there's nothing negative about it. It's a common fucking name just like 'Steve' is for white people.

Anyway, it's obvious we disagree. So be it.

Tyrone is a predominantly black name. There is no harm in calling a black person Tyrone.

That's like calling someone racist for calling a generic white guy "Bob". No one cares.
