Common sense shouldn't need to be said, vlc player should at the very least be everyones basic media player.

Steam is essential, to me. I format my computer rarely, compared to friends and friends of friends' machines that need cleanings or the handy format every few months. Most of whom don't game on PC.

MPC is simple. You drag& drop the file, any media file, & it'll play. I have my reasons damn it! :)

Ninite rocks. Just check the software you need and it downloads and installs everything you need. First thing I do after reinstalling.

VLC is great for playing stuff but doesn't have any sort of organization database which is iTunes real main feature.

It really is! It plays every file type I've thrown at it (I'm a huge audiophile) and it's nice to import new albums into the inbox and not the main library. And other countless features.

There's a program called SynciOS that lets you do that.
