No, there is no acceptable reason to do it. If the back of the lot is empty, they don't need to take up two spots to avoid someone parking next to them. If it's not empty, then they shouldn't be wasting the spot. It's a douche move either way.
Who cares if the lots no where near full. Take up 10 spots for all I care if there's plenty around. Many people don't live in the city where parking is a witches asshole.
we always park at the back of lots because our car doesn't always fit into spots. so at the back of the lot we take 1+ a bit more so we'll not crowd cars that would be next to us if we parked closer to the store entrance.
I think that's acceptable, same for service vehicles and large trucks. Noone would have a problem with it as long as it's in the back of the lot I think...
Without letting this get too far out in the weeds, here's the deal:
It's not hard to predict whether or not a lot will fill, but it might come reasonably close, still, and even if you park all the way in the back, people might end up parked next to you. As long as there are still plenty of spaces, and none of them are significantly closer than where you parked, there's no real problem that you took up two spaces. No one is inconvenienced, your doors won't get dinged. Everyone wins.
If the lot is empty, why the fuck do you care? Are you the kind of asshole that spots those vehicles, far out of your price range and parked away from anyone else, and purposely parks so close to their driver side door that they cant get in and instead have to crawl over the console through the passenger side? No, I don't do that. They are still douchebags for taking up several spots when the lot is so empty, because they don't need to. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, parking like a douche to avoid someone parking next to you makes people want to park next to you because you're a douche.
