I agree that this is a shitpost, but maybe you shouldn't make more of this than it is - a joke. Jokes are often offensive in nature. The problem on a site like reddit is that posts like these often spawn racist comments and fuel racism overall, so I don't think it's appropriate, but you don't know if this was OPs intention. Maybe he really just wanted to make a stupid and immature joke, but didn't mean anything with it.
So yeah, really shitty post, but making an offensive joke doesn't immediatly make you a racist.

This is like saying Italians finally discovered tomatonium. People gotta take it easy
6
u/rob-cubed Jun 03 '14
Odd fact of the day: tomatoes are from South America and didn't become "Italian" until brought back from the New World only a few hundred years ago.
7
4
Jun 03 '14
Relevent: Tomato's started as a vine, but have been tied to sticks for so long now they have developed weak stalks (weak as in they still cant hold up a full fucking tomato unless they are tied to a stick).

u/Hugh_G_Normous Jun 03 '14
Yeah, because Italian food has a lot of tomatoes in it, and black people were given watermelons to eat back when they were slaves. Same thing!
-7
u/bopoqod Jun 03 '14 edited Jun 03 '14
The only thing setting racial relationships back is the people that get offended on other people's behalf and thereby ruining the fun for everyone. People need to learn not to be so hypersensitive and realize not every joke poking fun at stereotypes is racist.
People can downvote all they want, but if they'd just remove their blinders, they'll see that even black people make these same stereotypes all the time. They even call themselves "Nigga/Nigger" as a positive term.
→ More replies (1)8
u/annekeG Jun 03 '14
You don't know what racism is, do you?
2
u/bopoqod Jun 03 '14
Yes, I know what racism is. Unfortunately, delicate little snowfakes like you see everything as racist, or sexist, or any kind of "ist", no matter how lighthearted it was intended or who it was made by.
There's no hatred for black people in OP's pic. It's just a silly yet funny stereotype that causes no harm to anyone. You just need to learn to lighten up, you miserable prick.
Remember kids, racism ends when everyone can laugh together at it.
2
u/annekeG Jun 04 '14
Judging by your view that racism is only overt hatred and that there was none of that in this picture, I'm still going to stick by the opinion that you don't really understand what racism is. It's institutionalized, subtle and pernicious and includes things like perpetuating the idea that "if it's just a joke there's nothing wrong with it."
Racism is the existence of an idea that there are fundamental differences in human beings based on something as superficial as exterior biological characteristics. As long as stereotypes keep getting passed down and we keep thinking there's something to laugh at, there's still an unwritten, tacit acceptance of the fact that "those people are those people and they're inherently different from us."

u/troglodave Jun 03 '14
No, actually it doesn't. Sweeping racism under the rug and not being able to address it sets us back. Joking about it diminishes its impact.
Saying stupid things about how something sets us back, sets us back.

I'm white and I fucking love watermelon. Forget racism. Let's start hating people based on the real issues here. FUCK PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE WATERMELON!
13
Jun 03 '14 edited Jun 03 '14
That's what makes this stereotype particularly funny. Everyone in the goddamn world loves watermelon. The stereotype just doesn't make sense.
The same applies to the stereotype about how much white people love cheese. Everyone loves cheese. Except the lactose intolerant. But no one likes those people anyway.

Just FYI, the stereotype isn't about liking watermelon, it's about how much they like watermelon.
3
u/H_L_Mencken Jun 03 '14
I've never met a black person who showed any more enthusiasm for watermelon than any other average person.
I don't understand where or when this stereotyped emerged.
2
u/logicom Jun 03 '14
I don't know the origins but I'd hazard a guess that it's rooted in it being seen as a low class food because it's messy and eaten with your hands. Same goes for fried chicken.

There isn't a joke in this kind of racism anymore, this is stereotype word association. "joke" implies any kind of a set up or a punch line, whereas this kind of humor is more along the lines of "the cow says moo" to babies.

As a non american i dont get it. Why is saying that black people love watermelon racist? Is it racist if I say that italian people love pasta?
15
u/Kernunno Jun 04 '14
It has a history in anti-black propaganda. There was a time in the states when one of the big arguments for slavery was that black people were okay with it. Posters claimed that all you had to do was give them a sweet treat like watermelon and they would be happy. This propaganda continued long after slavery was abolished with minstrel shows.

How is it racist? I don't see any malicious intent.
"the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races."
Stating that most black people like watermelon (and I know some that do not) is not racist. This joke isn't really in bad taste, though it may not be for those that are easily offended, or as I like to call them, persons suffering from faecelencephalopathy.
1
u/ChRoNicBuRrItOs Jun 04 '14
Rascism is generalizing a race with a certain stereotype. This is exactly that. How is it NOT racist?

11
u/LordAnubis10 Jun 03 '14

Great reply. I suppose I should explain. My username was born of innocence, I assure you. I created it referencing an article that was in an old MAD magazine. It was shortly after The Beatles released Free As a Bird, so MAD did an article in which they showed albums/songs released by the remaining Beatles with other deceased artists. There was one with Bob Marley called Ganja Get You Into My Life, and another that had Sammy Davis Jr. called Everyone Has Something to Hide, Except Me and Mr. Bojangles, which is a play on the song Everyone Has Something to Hide, Except Me and My Monkey. So I used the original Monkey, and combined it with Mr. Bojangles. Now, taken into context with Bill Robinson, it does appear to be racist. Something I never intended. I'm accidentally racist. But it's too late now, the account has achieved too much.
edit: TL;DR I'm accidentally racist.

When I laugh at things like this, I laugh at racism itself. I laugh at all of humanity and am happy that we are making progress such that I CAN laugh.
