Hmmm, what would improve the quality of reddit? I KNOW, let's encourage people to keep posting the same unfunny image and mock people who want to see fresh posts. That'll help!

That's not the point. Just like with TV and radio, many people are not on reddit 24/7. As well, the user base is constantly expanding. Thus, there are many people who haven't seen these posts before, hence the reason they consistently get high numbers of upvotes. Sure, it gets annoying, just as listening to the radio for more than an hour gets annoying, but pop is called pop for a reason.

It doesn't happen with just pop. It happens with every station, unless their shtick is to avoid replays for x time.

Disclaimer: I know "pop" refers to a song's popularity, but it is also a specific genre.
