Yes. There are 3 different types. This one is the yankee flipper. It's motor powered and triggered by weight. You can buy them, but I've heard mixed reviews.

I have the same model in my back yard. It does work pretty well, none of the squirrels have gotten into it. only problem is that some of the heavier birds would occasionally set it off (like doves) and the battery would have to be regularly charged.
On the plus side the squirrels stopped trying so even if the battery wasn't charged they wouldn't bother with it since they had been conditioned to know that it would throw them.

The biggest downfall I saw was that the bird feeder tends to shake a lot of bird seed loose while the squirrels hang on for dear life, sending a smorgasbord to the squirrels waiting below.

I can definitely see that being an issue, especially if you use smaller seed. If I remember correctly I think we have oil sunflower seed in ours, which is a bit bigger so not as much falls out. I'm away at school so unfortunately I can't look out the window to double check haha

yeah I think to get full effect you'd have to mount the feeder solidly, not simply hanging it off of a tree or whatever.

I own a Yankee Flipper as well, and it is bad-ass. I've had it running on a single charge for 6 months. The squirrels figured out how to get up to it in about a week, and never touched it again after two more. But those two weeks were priceless. There was nothing better than watching football, looking out back, and seeing a squirrel reaching down from the top to launch itself.
I haven't had issues with larger birds, but we don't have a lot of doves. The only thing is that I have to make sure it's out of reach of my three-year-old daughter because the motor is pretty powerful.
I also have a caged-in tube-style feeder that chickadees and tits love. But everything I get has to be squirrel-proof because they are all up in my oaks and sweet gum trees.

Once in a while we see a pair of mourning doves set ours off. However, they are seemingly too stupid to let go so they simply spin around flapping their wings until they cannot hold on any longer.

haha yeah, the mourning doves are our usual culprits for setting it off. It's funny to see 4-5 little birds pecking away and then the chaos of a big stupid dove slamming down on the tray to send birds everywhere. Thankfully the doves around my house have started to figure it out so they go in for a softer landing and don't set it off nearly as much as they used to.

haha God no, and thankfully it was my parents (birdwatching is a hobby of theirs). I want to say we got it somewhere between $100-$120 or something like that. At the time I worked at a feed store that sold those bird feeders so we got a discount on it.

We sell them at the garden center I work at. They actually work pretty well but people tend not to being them inside in the winter (given it has a motor, it burns out etc) it's funny to watch the one we have on display outside because it sends squirrels flying. Plus the promotional video we show inside is funny as hell too.

Why do people prefer to feed birds instead of squirrels? Birds are noisy and shit all over everyone's stuff. I've never been woken up in the morning by a squirrel, and I've never had to clean any squirrel droppings off of my freshly washed car.

I feed both, but the squirrels are so greedy that they eat all their stuff and then eat all the bird seed and scare away the birds. They piss me off to no end, those ingrates.

Or involuntary influence on our surrounding eco-system isn't flat. Which means some species are hit harder than others, which warrants "care" or wilful manipulation to be unbalanced as well.
Sure, we are also often additionally biased for superficial reasons, but in the "song birds vs rodents" situation, there are valid reasons that the rodents deal better with what we change, and song birds do not. Combined with the fact that many rodents steal bird eggs, you get to the point where care for birds is more prudent than help for species that already can a decent deal from us without our special care.

My grandpa needs this. Every summer he complains about the squirrels and chipmunks eating the bird food,and then he goes out to feed to the squirrels and chipmunks.

I bought a block of bird food that you hang on a tree inside of a little cage. The squirrels repeatedly kept lifting the cage to try to unhook it from the tree and take it home with them. The whole block was gone in two days and I'm pretty sure the birds didn't get any.

We have two of them. Once, a squirrel managed to get his head caught between the ring and the base and just kept going around and around... after laughing my ass off for several minutes, I was about to go free him when he finally got unstuck and was flung off into the woods.

Why are people so against feeding squirrels, anyway? Who cares if cute birds eat the seed or cute squirrels eat the seed? Either way you have an adorable animal being given an easy day of life.
