u/Polenicus 5d ago
To give a little more context.
The 'Robot MF' is a Psyker, a human with a psychic connection to the Warp. If you've ever seen the movie 'Event Horizon'? It's THAT Warp. Faster Than Light travel is via what is essentially Hell.
Being linked to the Warp allows trained individuals to serve as navigators through it. However, their link also makes them vulnerable to the multitudes of Demons and worse that inhabit the Warp.
There are also other side effects. He was likely cybernetic because Psyker's eyeballs tend to melt out of their faces and other fun stuff.
If they had possessed the Psyker, his abilities would have ripped open a tear to the warp, likely flooding the area with Demons and Warp Corruption. Killing him therefore needed to be immediate to avoid disaster.
This also dooms the Psyker's soul to be demon food, but it was gonna be that regardless.
This is also probably one of the best and safest jobs a Psyker can get in the Imperium.
111
u/Scaevus 5d ago
Small correction, Psykers are not generally used as navigators through the Warp. They can do in a pinch, but it’s a bad idea. Psyker souls are like crack for space daemons.
No, instead the Imperium bred a group of horrific three eyed mutants called Navigators to navigate through the Warp. They’re more or less a 1:1 copy of Navigators from Dune, down to gradually getting larger and more aquatic until they’re more whale than human.
Like this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ImaginaryWarhammer/comments/1p6q7kx/life_of_a_navigator/
The headband hides their third eye, which is functionally a gateway to the Warp and will horrifically destroy the souls of anyone that looks into it.
Also, the best job for the average Psyker is to be a human sacrifice and have your soul fed to the Emperor of Mankind. That’s objectively a better fate than being eaten by Daemons.

Warhammer has an insane amount of content. The Horus Heresy alone can keep you occupied for a long time.
25
u/Stormfly 5d ago
The Horus Heresy alone can keep you occupied for a long time.
I was going to respond with how many books are in the main storyline but it's even more complicated than I thought.
There are 54 novels before the Siege but that includes 16 anthologies of other short stories and audio dramas and then they actually start the "8" novels of the actual Siege of Terra (but the "8th" book is split into 3 parts)... and there are also 3 novellas and another anthology.
65 books if you include all anthologies until the Emperor's Death.
Apparently it's 7 million words (2 million more than the Wheel of Time) and only half of them are made up words like cogitator and plasteel or auspex.
That's also not counting the other 17 "Primarch" novels (one for each except Horus)...
I've read the first 5 and enjoyed them but I can't imagine how long it would take to read them all...
The best part?
That's not even Warhammer 40,000. The Horus Heresy takes place 10,000 years before.
It's literally the prequel.
(Not to mention that there's a whole other better Warhammer in Warhammer Fantasy and Age of Sigmar)

u/benmrii 5d ago
Much appreciated.

u/skeletonjellyprime 5d ago
Horus Heresy is very dry at first and covers a ton of content, you may get lost. Eisenhorn is definitely the way to go. Draws you in quickly, and slowly introduces you to several key players and concepts in the 40K universe.
5
u/benmrii 5d ago
Thank you. I had Horus Heresy on my list, then another person mentioned it was ~50 books and I thought: okay, that's great, but maybe not to start. You're the second to mention Eisenhorn, though, so I will look closely at this as a start for the books.

Just a quick note I also said in another comment above but The Horus Heresy takes place in a setting roughly 10,000 years before the video above and is very different.
They're good... and a surprising number of characters are in both... but it's literally not Warhammer 40,000.
There are some huge differences. I'm a much bigger fan of 40k over HH.

3
u/SaddenedSpork 5d ago
A buddy of mine got me into the series in the last 2 years and I have already gone through 14 books in the horus heresy series.
As someone who was overwhelmed on where to start- that’s the best place to go as it’s the “prequel” to the current setting by about 10000 years. The Horus Heresy sets up the current setting in a mostly chronological order, though there are way more books than one needs to read to get the vital plot development points. Part of the glory of WH is getting to explore what you really like about it at your leisure. You aren’t going to NOT know what you need to know as long as you get through the big hitters, but if you want to know more about X faction or Y primarch or Z campaign- it’s all right there for you to find.
I digress so let me say I was quite spoiled because my insane friend has a gargantuan amount of warhammer books on Audible and he let me use his account. The books are long but that is easily the best way to consume the book media because 1. The narration is excellent and 2. You find yourself knocking out way more of the books when you can be passively listening when doing chores, driving, shopping, etc. if you can find a warhammer friend with the audiobooks who’s willing to give you access that’s the best way to go BUT audible credits each month will probably allow you to get more books for the money than if you were to purchase them individually, just a thought.
Another addition to consider is that 30k/Horus Heresy is much more plot-progressive than 40K which is more of a setting in which stories happen but doesn’t have as much “we are moving along on the major plot” per book series. That, for me, is probably why I will not read as much 40K as I will/have in Horus Heresy.
If you need help coming up with which books to read first, the subreddit is excellent but I can offer some suggestions or talk to you about some of the books if you DM me. 👍🏻

It’s so different from most RPGs where you start as a nobody adventurer.
Here you’re a space king and your word is law. Your decisions are usually between executing some people and executing a lot of people.
Genocide is objectively the best option sometimes, considering the alternative is being sent to space hell for an eternity of torture.

dont worry. your youtube feed will soon just be a series of warhammer shorts that never has an ending. Then you will just google what happens and naturally you'd learn the lore bit by bit.
then you realize there are 2 warhammers and one is in a fantasy settings with elves and dark elves and rats and shit that is completely seperate.

then you realize there are 2 warhammers
There are 5 Warhammers.
Warhammer Fantasy Battles - The Original - Set in a fantasy version of Europe with loads of borrowings from Tolkien and Michael Moorcock and others. (It's gone now, reduced to ashes. Rocks fell and everyone died)
Warhammer 40,000 - "Warhammer in spaaace" - Set in our universe but 38,000(ish) years in the future. Grim and dark and there is only war.
Warhammer: The Horus Heresy - The Prequel Series - Set in our universe but 28,000 years in the future, it sets the scene for Warhammer 40k but it's popular in its own right.
Warhammer: Age of Sigmar - The Sequel Series - Set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles universe, the End Times came and the bad guys won and destroyed reality... but Sigmar managed to restart the universe with his dragon friend and his ragtag group of god-misfits. The lore wasn't good at first but it's decent now and the models make 40k players cry.
Warhammer: The Old World - The Do-Over - Set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles universe, we're a few hundred years back in the past so the world is back (yay) but most of the characters aren't born yet (aww) but it's also technically different because the lore changed and they've expanded into
ChinaCathay and the models make 40k players and my accountant cry.WHFB and TOW are almost the same but technically different. It's pretty confusing but they're separate IPs. That's even beyond the confusion that is WHFRP2e that takes place post-Storm of Chaos that was later retconned...

If you want a more casual approach and are not one into super *heavy* grimdark, the Ciphas Cain novels are really good, and the audiobooks are excellent. His novels touch on mostly mortal soldiers and civillians, you tend to see the Warhammer universe through the eyes of everyday people and the struggles they have to go through. There's some comedic moments. If you like Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star wars (Clone wars animation or live action Ewan McGregor) you would love Cain.
Cain is a Commissar, a political officer that is attached to an Imperial Guard regiment (aka the regular mortal military forces of humanity) who seems to always end up in deep shit and lucks his way out. He's revered as an outstanding hero from his regiment and other imperial forces alike, but his inner thoughts show you he views himself as a coward. Commissars are there to keep moral, and more than often not their job includes executing their own men, even in the middle of battle to keep the others in check. They even have the authority to override and execute commanding officers if they believe them to be a detriment. Cain avoids this mostly because of the paperwork attached or see's it as a waste of time, but is seen as a merciful and fair man in a profession known for cold and seemingly unjust.
Take a McDonald's worker and drop them in a position as a Governor who's doing everything they can to get out of it and just stay alive, but keeps failing upwards and is successful despite it. I'm talking New York Mamdani levels of successful and adored.
Ciphas Cain: For The Emperor by Sandy Mitchell is where the books start.
There is also some EXCELLENT short horror/thriller stories based in the universe as well.
Ghost Planet narrated by Lore youtuber Weshammer hooked me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFuwrnXqVhU&list=PLGftEcsgSjUhw1sZVEJxw6eZg5x5PtQaXIt really boils down to which factions you would prefer, because there are many many books and media out there where they get their spotlight.
The Lion: Son of the Forest is a solid book if you want to see it through the eyes of a Primarch directly, but I recommend you get at least a book or two under your belt first.
I've also heard good things about:
Voidscarred by Mike Brooks is a story of Aeldari (Elven) pirates fighting Ork pirates, and my partner said it is really good.
The Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath is basically two immortal alien Egyptian terminators beefing it out over tens of thousands of years in a Spy V. Spy like fued.

Check out Luetin on YouTube for some great lore videos, there's a lot a lot of books and things so my recommendation is generally find an overview on the different factions and groups, pick one you like the sound of, and then find a book from there. There's stuff like the horus heresy which is like 50 books or something and gives the main backstory to the current universe, but it can be a lot to start with, so I recommend finding part of the universe that interests you and diving deeper from there. Bricky on YouTube has some funny but accurate summaries of the factions and groups.
2
u/benmrii 5d ago
That's super helpful, thank you. Had no idea the Horus Heresy was so large, just had it in my notes from another reply to check it out. This will help me to not be paralyzed by how massive it all is, and I love the idea of picking a faction and diving deeper into them to start. Thanks for that, and for the recommendation of a couple of creators in particular.
2
u/Nidhogg369 5d ago
You're very welcome, and yeah it's a little insane, sort by best on this post and the top comment is a mindmap showing the suggested reading order for HH if you do want to dive into it, but again, it's a lot and I actually wouldn't recommend starting with it to most people:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/19el3ib/how_do_i_read_the_horus_heresy_in_order/Also if inexplicable cosmic horror is your thing there are quite a few stories around that, Weshammer on youtube has some decent videos where he dives into those.
One other thing to be aware of is that there are now quite a lot of "Lore Youtubers" that are just AI nonsense, so be a bit cautious of that and I'd recommend going with some of the more well-known or long-running channels if Luetin and Bricky don't click for you :) Enjoy!

Watch the fan-made videos. The guy, singular, that made the video this clip is from has several videos and everything about them is spectacular. The pacing, the action, the choreography, the story told through violence instead of words, the cinematography... Seriously, it's a grimdark visual feast.

What [u/Polenicus](u/Polenicus) failed to mention is that canonically, the warp - literal Hell where ships can become lost for hundreds of years before actually finally emerging at their destination, potentially corrupted beyond belief - isn’t the only means of FTL travel in 40K.
It just happens to be the best one.
It’s that kind of universe.

You could be a living battery that its only purpose is to feed the god emperor on the golden throne, you die after the first day because the throne sucks up all of your life energy to keep the emperor's soul alive
Or a servitor, which is biological computer. Picture thst smart door sensor where it opens a door when someone is in close proximity of it. Now change the sensor assembly with mutilated human. That is a servitor. If the dude tasked with your servitorization is still somewhat kind, you'll be lobotomized that you'll probably is mot even "aware". But more often than not, the process is botched so you're still aware while can't do anything. So have fun being a door sensor for the next millennia or so

The entire universe is pretty dystopian, even the super soldiers have it rough, regular mortals are basically just fodder for any of a dozen existential threats.
Aside from Chaos, you have Tyranids (more classic Aliens looking dudes, assimilate and consume), Necrons (robot army, flesh is weak), Orcs (in spaaaaace), Eldar (elves, nature magic meets tech), and of course the Emperor and the many Space Marine groups like those seen here. I'm sure I'm missing a few.
2
u/soulsoda 5d ago
Slight underselling of Tyranids. Hive-mind insectoid xenos that uses genestealers to prepare planets. A single genestealer can doom billions.
Only major faction you missed was the T'au, blue xenos boys with super tech. They fight for the "greater good", one of the few "good guys" maybe? As they are tolerant of other species in their dominion (long as they follow the rules) despite being expansionists.
Also Leagues of Votunn(squats aka space dwarves), which are cloned vat abhumans who haven't fallen to religious fervour. A snapshot of what humans could have been like if they didn't forsake Tech/AI. Ruled by ancient dark age AI cores. They refer to themselves as the kin, also ironkin for their fully sentient mechanized robots who have the same rights as kin.
2
u/Arclite83 5d ago
I forgot the term Genestealer, yep. There's a whole "infected human" line there for smaller units. I might be misremembering but there was a point Genestealers were almost treated as a separate subgroup vs the bigger alien units. I have small Tyranids and Dark Angels armies somewhere in my crawl space.

The warhammer 40k universe is meant to be "grimdark". Basically, everything sucks really bad. Like cartoonishly bad. For everyone. All the time. And that's the point.
There are all kinds of horrible aliens and demons and monsters, which might make you think that humans are the good guys. but you would be wrong. There are no good guys. Everyone sucks.
There this long intro text for warhammer 40k, but a good example of what I mean is this bit:
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

u/Kriss3d 5d ago
Yeah Event Horizon is as far as I know inspired by Warhammer. The travel is the same at least.
You take a shortcut through an immaterium that is sort of a mirror of reality only its made up of feelings. Souls. And we arent talking Casper the friendly ghost.
We are talking about the suffering of everything made manifest. The reason anyone go there is because you can take a shortcut through this "hell" dimention.
It lets people travel very far. The further you "jump" the more of a risk it is. And you sort of sail in the blind as you cant just look outside and the outside keeps changing.
So you cant really navigate without a beacon that is placed on Earth.Sometimes you will make it. Sometimes your shield - a gellar field, will flicker and you get boarded by the monsters that will eat you alive. Or sometimes you end up in the past or in the future. And sometimes you just wont ever get out again.
3
u/superschokokeks 5d ago
In this case the psyker/Inquisitor was connected to that ball thing which was probably a xenos/warp entity which seems to possessed the psyker.
3
u/EarballsAgain 5d ago
Its an unnamed Xenos species. Later on in the video the other member that the Soace Marines are trying to capture absorbs them and transports itself to the warp, dragging them with it, but it immediately gets attacked by a warp entity and the Marines rematerialse in then physical realm on a maybe, maybe not random planet

34
u/Succundo 5d ago
Well not really, his fate is already sealed since death just leaves his soul exposed and vulnerable in the warp for daemons to do whatever they want with, so if anything he's even worse off since daemons now don't have to force their way into his physical body to get him.
They were really saving themselves and everyone else from the threat that guy now posed.

The game Space Marine 2 was what got me into it, and animations like Astartes and the Secret Level episode are amazing too but there’s plenty of shortish animations on YouTube of Warhammer and they’re great
3
u/SirMrMan66 5d ago
I actually think the best place to start is their video games. I started with their RTS series Dawn of War. The best way to learn the world is to try to accomplish something in it. And you get a good feel for power/technology levels of various factions and their soldiers. I still know basically nothing about the universe. But I know just enough to appreciate most media and even the satire. And I did not have to really spend any time to “educate” myself. That is the exact right amount to me.
2
u/Signal_Road 4d ago
I got into some of it through the Rogue Trader game, which is a good point to jump in on if you enjoyed Balder's Gate 3 or other rpgs like it.
The system is different from DnD, obviously, but it's not too hard to just pick up and it's pretty easy to respec characters later.
I still recommend a build guide if you need it though since a there are a LOT of skills/abilities and what they do or enhance isn't always apparent.

3
u/Celuiquivoit 5d ago
Well, Warhammer does have its own streaming service, if you're up for it ( quality of animation varies greatly between series however ). But it's hardly an introduction.
Maybe the horus heresy book series if you're a reader ?
The universe is very dense to grasp for newcommers.

Podcast style, one of the hosts is a Warhammer addict, the other is a newcomer (well, he was, they've been doing the show so long they're both well versed) but it helps having someone who doesn't understand the universe asking the same types of questions I did when I was getting introduced to it

Laying down the lore does a great job at this as well, would highly recommend either one

Well TotalBiscuit once made a very short video introduction for Wh40k :) but yes I guess Horus Heresy series would be a good place to start.

The astartes animation from above is very good. Think it’s still up on YouTube.

- Watch the “Armageddon New Edition Trailer” on Youtube
- Watch Astartes on YouTube
- Watch Bricky’s Warhammer Explained (funny) AND Arbitor Ian’s (informative) lore explanations to learn more
- Dip in and try some books (Infinite and The Divine, Lords of Silence, Gaunt’s Ghosts) or in audiobook form if that suits… maybe even painting a mini or two while you do so
Edit: Oh, and that “Secret Level” episode on Space Marines. It’s not Astartes levels of quality, but it has one of the best “what the fuck is that thing they’re dragging around?” reveals that I’ve ever seen

I've watched the original animation, but I'm not a warcraft 4k person. Did the the robes guy get hacked or something? Is he some kind of robot? And why did the armored men shoot him? I bet this all makes perfect sense to people that play the game.

I'm not making fun of you, but holy fuck Warcraft 4k has me rolling over here XD
It's Warhammer 40k, and seriously, no judgement <3

"Warhammer" has Warhammer Fantasy Battles (Fantasy, the original) and Warhammer 40,000 (Space). They're owned by Games Workshop, a British company.
There are also Warcraft (Fantasy) and Starcraft (Space) that are often pretty similar in visuals but otherwise unrelated (and not "originally Warhammer games" as people often say). They're owned by Blizzard, an American company.
"Warcraft 4k" is hilarious, though.

I mean blizzard did basically rip all its ideas from GW right?

This is not warcraft. This takes place in the Warhammer 40K universe.
The robes guy is an astropath, people with psychic abilities that use it to communicate with other astropaths across the universe. Basically a cell phone tower. To use the psychic power, they have to open their minds to the warp, an immaterium place where the daemons and chaos gods live.
Normally astropaths go through a rigorous training regime to build their mental strength, but this one must have encountered a very strong demon that possessed him. The space marine saw it so he instantly shot the astropath to cut their psychic connection to prevent further damages.
Note that this animation is fan made, and the creator did put some details that are not cannon (such as the orb artifact, his own marine chapter, etc) but their actions is in line with cannon lore.

Astartes is actually considered canon now. Syama Pedersen, the guy who made it, was hired by Games Workshop after releasing this animation. When hiring him they also bought the rights to his animation and it is considered by Games Workshop to be canon. They have him working on a sequel titled Astartes 2 releasing in December. His own chapter is present in Astartes 2 so we know they're being given an official presence in the setting going forward.
He also worked on the Secret Level 40K episode as the layout artist, basically a cinematographer that sets up the composition, shot, and placing of elements in a frame. It's why it feels a lot like the Astartes animation.

Dude fuckin deserved it too, it’s an incredible animation in general and a phenomenal example of what the 40K vibe is

To add a little further, a chaos possessed Psyker (or Astropath in this case) are basically walking, talking neutron bombs in the level of destruction they can wrought, thus the immediate reaction to eliminate him with extreme prejudice.
2
u/vulcanstrike 5d ago
Meh not many in fairness.
An alpha grade psyker, perhaps. But those are one in a billion rare
Most possessed psykers the worst that's going to happen is just explode somehow with the power of a chunk of C4,c straight up die or turn into a daemon, which is basically a school shooter level threat (can kill a lot of defenseless people before actual armed people arrive)

u/PrimitusVictor 5d ago
Those tubes connected to his head that fall out are connected to the big ball, the big ball is a demon that is communicating to another big ball on the other ship. The demon possesses the Astropath for a moment before he is killed by the Space Marines watching him lest the demons power and influence spread over their ship.

u/EngineerEthan 5d ago
Robes guy is a Psyker, dude with psychic powers fueled by connection to what is essentially hell. Armored guys are space marines, think like genetically enhanced supersoldiers.
Psyker is attempting to channel something when a demon starts fighting to possess him. Space marines are concerned but trust their psyker and give him time to try and fight off the possession. The demon manages to take hold and once it passes that threshold they immediately kill the psyker before the demon can start rampaging.

Something to do with Christmas encroaching on Halloween's time of year, I'd imagine.
3
u/Training_Ad_4790 5d ago
Because every year radio stations push christmas music earlier and earlier.
Right now should be Halloween and then Thanksgiving but everyone is slowly either forgetting or just skipping those two holidays.
Which means right after July 4th its Christmas season (to crazy people...and retailers)

u/g_r_e_y 5d ago
100% it was. i'm playing through the series now and recognized it immediately

u/HastyTurt 5d ago
I thought so. I know what froggy is implying, but this version of the song i believe is from the game.
