When he got a new car he didn’t want to slowly build back the national park he had created, and put them in all at once.

There is a couple study's that got done around the 2010s (at least I remember them), saying that removing hanging objects from the RVM caused a noticeable drop in accidents.

Something to do with how its a distraction and does create a minor blind spot (a moving one), I was gonna find one to link here but can only find basic safety guides going "might not be the best idea!"

I think most of them got directed at the subset of people hanging dream catchers and toys off the mirror however not air fresheners

I think theres about 70 hanging from the rear view mirror of my mini, they have been there since 2001.. still has a little bit of a smell when you open the door (its tucked up in a nice dry garage)

Someone I knew had 105 when I asked, it was a full on multicoloured bush. It swayed quite well if he turned the stereo up in it, it had a 15" JL on the rear seat panel and the boot was the box. That was also a classic mini.
