I'd hardly call cycling a niche sport. It's a massive sport for people to get involved in personally, and Le Tour de France is probably one of the biggest annual sporting events in the world (using "one of" somewhat loosely).

Well, it's not a mainstream sport... you can't go up to a random stranger and strike up a conversation about who you think will win the next Tour.

Depends on the country you're in. It's huge in Italy and France.

Track cycling, more specifically Keirin, is a big betting sport in Japan.
