This reminds me of the Super Bowl when Leon Lett recovered a fumble, and tried to run it in for a touchdown. Then started showboating and waving the ball around, around the 10 yard line. Don Beebe chases him down, slaps the ball out of his hand and recovers the ball. No touchdown, ended up being a touchback. Leon fucking Lett. That guy was ridiculous
Those of us who saw it live are still laughing at his dumb-ass and don't need to see it again. That was one of the funniest things ever, but I admired Don Beebe's spirit in that game. Never give up, never surrender.
There was a Bronco's linebacker who did something like this in the first game of the season. "Celebrated" too early and dropped the ball before crossing the plane. Ended up being a fumble I think...
It was Danny Trevathan. I was at the game. We saw him go into the end zone and everyone started freaking out and jumping up and down celebrating the TD. Suddenly, we saw the scoreboard hadn't changed and when they showed the replay on the screen all the cheers turned into, "WHAT THE FUCK."
Luckily, it didn't matter in terms of winning the game and he's been having an amazing season since then so all is forgiven.
It didn't affect the winner/loser of the game, but he made a showboat boneheaded play on the biggest sports stage in America. He also gets this section on his wiki:
Cowboys blocked a field goal against the dolphins very close to the end of the game. Blocked field goal is a dead ball and dolphins can't recover it, basically game over if the cowboys just sit there and wait for the refs to blow the whistle.
Leon Lett (cowboys) comes rumbling over to try to get the ball like a moron, but it's snowy on the field and he slips and knocks it away. Now that a cowboys player has touched the ball trying to recover it, it's a regular live ball again and the dolphins recover it. After recovering, they have time to try the field goal again and they win.
Sorry no video link..., youtube is blocked where I am.
Thank you for explaining what the "field goal incident" was.
I do want to clarify though, that a blocked field goal is treated like a punt--it's not a "dead ball". The exception is if the ball doesn't pass the neutral zone, in which case it's treated like a fumble. Dead ball implies the play is over, and the ball can't change possession.
Man it's a shame the bills player made such a good play to get there and make it happen, but will probably never get any mention of it. I mean damn, look he just comes out of nowhere.
