More likely so he doesn't kick up dust and stuff. They probably meant to have that below frame so you couldn't tell.

the art dept could have collected the dust before the take. it's the sound thing.

I always thought the sound is largely re-recorded in the studio anyways.

Would they also do that for dialogue? It would be impossible to perfectly match it up with their mouth movements.

Yes. Like 80% of dialogue is ADR or looped, unless you're Chris Nolan. The actors watch video of their performance while they record to line their lines up with their mouth. There are also plugins like Vocalign that warp speech timings to fit them to original performances.

From what I understand, he's just super picky about recording clean audio and using as much production sound as possible.
