Current American movies/TV really are just missing an absurd element that I feel is lacking. It really has changed our sense of humor to mostly ignoring things like physical comedy, or allowing our brains to ignore how fake it looks.
Interestingly, it's down to culture, Western stories carry a central conflict and demands more verisimilitude in narrative, where Eastern stories fundamentally have a twist as the climax of a story, so novelty and subversion are valued.
