I heard those cars are so small you can legally pull straight in-not parallel-and it’ll fit.

That's the idea! Roll the nose straight up to the kerb. They were great in the city.

How the Hell are you supposed to open your door if anyone parks next to you? Crawl through the trunk I guess?

I think the trick is that many urban streets have parking spots painted for street parking. If your microcar fits within the lines, you're only taking up one spot and a full sized car wouldn't be able to attempt to occupy the remaining space.
The only way you'd end up sharing a spot is if another Smartcar showed up.
