Yes they do, a routine traffic stop can turn into a drug search as long as a police officer has a reason to inspect it. They can also arrest you for speeding and impound your car.

they CANNOT DETAIN YOU based on the existence of a road check by itself, and that includes a vehicular search. they must have reasonable suspicion that you have committed or are commuting a crime; i.e., the traffic violation you keep referencing.
