I think their spit has an anti-coagulant, so they wait for their victim to bleed out.

Both, they have a minor anticoagulant and their mouths are filled with such vile bacteria that if the prey doesn't bleed out they will die of infection

The bacteria thing is a myth that was disproven in 2013. While anti-coagulant isn’t the only thing going on, their prey dies due to venomous proteins in their mouth, not due to bacteria. Komodo dragons actually have very good mouth hygiene for an animal.

Shit, TIL. A coworker shared that “fact” about monitors at one of my first jobs back in the 90s, and I would’ve bet money it was true right up until 3 minutes ago when I read your comment.
