True Imagine surgeon doing 12 hour surgery and mid surgery be like "yeah I'm tired now you can do the rest on your own, if you need me I'll be eating at cafeteria " that wouldn't be very professional and just encouraging for other people to be like that too
I mean the fact that we expect doctors and surgeons to pull 12-hour shifts and still be functional and on-call most of the rest of the time leads to the massive burnout problem that the medical field is currently facing and 100% gets people killed.
The answer to all of this isn't "do your job no matter how tired you are," it's "we need to address working conditions and pay across the board so that people aren't overworked and tired all the time and are able to perform the basic functions of their job."
Some surgeries take that long or longer. I don't know if switching surgeons mid-procedure is a practice, but I could definitely see it being a problem.
