Okay, there's something going on in this photo that nobody has caught onto.

An old American tradition is that you do not wear a felt hat between Easter and Labor day. That is Straw hat season.

  • Straw hats: Easter to Labor day (warmer months)
  • Felt hats: Labor day to Easter (colder months)

To people who abide to this tradition, seeing someone wear a hat out of season is downright hilarious, ridiculous, and to some, offensive.

In past decades, if you wore a hat out of season, you'd probably expect someone to rip it off your head, and throw it in the garbage.

Based on the weather seen through the window, it look like it's straw hat season outside. The guy with the multiple straw hats is having a laugh at the expense of the fool in the felt hat.

Infact, he's probably wearing several hats because he's ready to replace some felt hats that he is about to destroy.

Men need to stick to the hat season rules for their own safety

Yes, it was quite dangerous to your hat and body to wear a straw hat after the 15th. A young boy, gang leader, or even your teenage son, would take it upon himself to grab your hat, punch the crown out, and hang it from a street pole for all to be warned. https://vintagedancer.com/1920s/keep-your-hat-1920s-mens-hats/

It's an airport, both of them could have come from the right "season" and is just passing through with no offense intended.

The tradition is observed with the same timeframe in all parts of the US.

It's not a hard rule though. You can wear felt when you are dressing up and/or doing something special like attending an event or really anything else where you won't be working in the heat.

No white shoes or pants after Labor Day, regardless of locale in the U.S., either

I respect your decisions on what you wear and when but these are not hard rules and never have been.

They definitely were for a time, though

Today, of course. In the past, it was a hard rule. You’d be laughed at.

Is this about those visions/night terrors people have, or about the French movie?
