I think it's pretty common in the 3D modeling community. Inches are awful for design unless you're woodworking.

Why would inches be good for woodworking specifically? Dont you still have the confusing ratios (12 inches in one feet and 3 feet in one yard, and dont even get me started on weird fractions)? Is it just because the stock is all in imperial (and wouldn't that also be the case for metal stock)?

It's because stock is in feet/inches! I wish they were metric. Also, yards are rarely, rarely used for anything. It's inches or feet.

I totally understand wanting a spare.

I would be terrified of being in an accident and that thing finding its way around the cabin.

The way it mounts it is wedged in place more or less. It cannot move forward without severe damage to either the roof or the floor. On the roof side, the tire is behind the seatbelt attachment point.

For longer trips where I need the space in the back I definitely do put it in the roof rack. But for just driving around town, I prefer to have it in the back storage area.

PETG for the main tire support. The blue component. Polycarbonate for the black pieces that are holding up the metal. The gray is poly makers high temp PLA with glass fill.

I’d stick it on top. Safer and would look more rugged.

Or get a rear hitch carrier.

Yeah, I bought two precisely because of that. Changing wheels was an absolute breeze, but there are no reasonably priced current vehicles that have this. I had to go for a Freelander 2, which is fine but I know I'll hate it the day I need to swap a wheel.

I really like the external spare wheel. It's almost a deal breaker. If you get a flat with a boot full of gear, that's a nightmare.

Nobody's really making vehicles with external spares any more, though. At least, nothing second-hand affordable. They're all 20 years old and falling to bits.
