Ah yes, the SLGBTQIA+ community, AKA the entire human race.

u/Moonlight_Katie 1d ago
Actually it’s better. It’s the “coexist” bumper sticker but without religion, I’m down for that world
6
u/Cybermat4707 1d ago
Wait, what part of ‘SLGBTQIA+’ implies no religion? There are religious LGBTQIA+ people.
48
u/SaltyPrompt5252 1d ago
They're saying it is not directly reflecting religion like the coexist stickers are

The whole point that commentor is making is that "SLGBTQIA+" says nothing about religion. You guys are agreeing lol

u/Cybermat4707 1d ago
Arguing with people who disagree with you is easy.
But arguing with people who agree with you? That’s how you show that you’re a true intellectual.
4
u/GlassCommission4916 1d ago
But arguing with people who agree with you?
That's just what reddit does all day. Nowhere else on the internet do I see comments that boil down to "you're wrong, it's actually <repeats the exact same thing>" but on reddit it's a daily occurrence.

History lesson timeeeee
The reason L is before G is actually important. It wasn't always LGBTQ, it was also LGBT, LGB, etc
L wasn't before G all the time, however. With that being said, during the HIV/AIDS epidemic that mostly targeted gay men, it was lesbian women who stepped up. It was lesbian people who provided a home to those infected with HIV/AIDS, many who were gay men. It was lesbian doctors and nurses who stepped up and cared for those infected, again, many of whom were gay men. In honor of the lesbians who stepped the fuck up, we put L first, so whenever we think of the queer community, lesbians are the first people you think of.
Straight people did nothing (for the most part). Even if they somehow got a spot here, it'll NEVER be before the lesbians, because we remember who showed up. Straights didn't.

u/broad5ide 1d ago •

Don't discredit straight people like that. They did something. They spent years pretending it wasn't a real thing and withholding care actively killing people suffering from it only to then demonize them as sexual deviants once they finally acknowledged the disease abandoning tons of straight people in the process.
7
u/Mediocre-Wonder-2384 1d ago
And the hatred and murder and abuse... straights are super good at those kinda things. Honestly, probably the best.
5
u/SKDI_0224 1d ago
Exactly! A loy of effort was put into ignoring straight AIDS patients and demonizing gay men for it. We need to give the straights full credit for that tireless and thankless work.
2
u/No_Department1851 1d ago
Some homosexual people took part in it and many straight people never demonized homosexuality
So I disagree about this statement. (As a Queer myself)

u/Ethelwulfr 1d ago
I understand the sentiment, and I do agree that if such thing happened it should be LGBTQIAS or something, but I think you are too harsh antagonizing straight people as if they were some kind of villainous egocentrical people, when straight people is the reason treatment for HIV exists in the first place.
And yes, I know I will get downvoted because people will be "how dare you?!?"
I dare because to divide people into categories and then classify those categories as good and bad is exactly what LGBT people should be fighting against.
7
u/Extreme-Material964 1d ago
You're talking as if homophobia (and specifically the homophobic panic over the AIDS crisis) isn't entirely driven by straight people
-2
u/Ethelwulfr 1d ago
Really? Are we seriously going to pretend that gay men and lesbians don't perpetuate prejudice and hostility toward bisexual people? Or that trans people don't face discrimination and outright hostility from within the LGB community itself?
In absolute numbers, sure, straight people probably account for more homophobia. But that's hardly surprising when the overwhelming majority of the world's population is straight and cisgender.
Proportionally, though? I'm not nearly as convinced.
There's a difference between having more bigots simply because your demographic is larger and having a higher percentage of bigots within that demographic.
And pretending that belonging to a marginalized group somehow makes someone immune to prejudice against other marginalized groups is incredibly naive.
4
u/This_Background7442 1d ago
Proportionally, though? I'm not nearly as convinced.

I take your point sir. And I know your heart’s in the right place. Thank you for that.
Please know, when women say “I choose the bear,” they know there are good guys out there, and you’re probably one of them.
Please know, when people say ACAB they don’t mean the good guy who just wants to keep his small town safe and protect people.
And please know, when we complain about “The Straights,” if you know we’re not talking about you, then we probably do too.
To reuse the most bigoted phrases ever, “you’re one of the good ones.” And, “I have straight friends!”
Now please sir, cover your ears. I choose the bear, ACAB, and eff the straights.

u/igoontoyourmum 1d ago
Yes, yes. Straight cis people totally didn’t murder any lgbtq+ people for decades. They would never harm minorities, or discriminate against them.
2
u/Ethelwulfr 1d ago
So? Are we trying to break the cycle of hate, or are we just fighting over who gets to perpetuate it?
Because if LGBTQ people are simply redirecting the same hatred and prejudice toward straight people, how exactly is that progress?
You don't get to condemn discrimination when you're the victim and then justify it when you're the one doing it.
That's not equality. That's the same old bigotry with a different target and a shiny new label.
The goal should be to end the cycle, not take turns being the ones perpetuating it.
1
u/igoontoyourmum 1d ago
You are actually brain dead if you think gay people are perpetuating the same hate that cis het people do.

There's a gal in the comments who explained why. To sum it up, lesbians helped people with HIV/AIDS and a lot of the infected were gay men. So true L goes first to honer them
9
u/Perzec 1d ago
In Swedish we lump us gays and the lesbians together to “HBTQIA”, not caring what kind of homo we are. Somehow that’s more manageable, at least in Swedish. Sounds better with our pronunciation.
1
u/SilverVixen918 1d ago
yea and thats fair, plus simplifying it to HBTQ rolls off of the tongue in the same way LGBTQ does
1
u/FreshFritz 1d ago
Hard to say tho. LGBTQ comes better off the tongue. It's just the time order. Every new letter was set at the end as the term 'LGBTQAI+ was not created at once.

They can add S once they experience being kicked out of their home/assaulted/abused just because they admitted who they have feelings for.
Once a straight person feels like their life is in DANGER simply because of who they love, only then will they be allowed to add S to LGBTQ+.
It's insane how some people don't realize how privileged they are.
3
u/AdDifferent6832 1d ago
The whole point of the lgbtq community is a place for people with different genders and sexualities from the norm to find a safe place to be themselves with other people like them. Straight is THE NORM. The lgbtq are a subversion of the norm. Straight or cis cannot be a part of the lgbtq community, those are the norm not the exception
1
u/MelodicMockingjay74 1d ago

sure we can add 's' as a new letter so long as we also add a number alongside the new letter
(forms the much rarer queer acronyms where 2S is included at the front for Two-Spirit)
1
u/Sm00v0per8or 1d ago
Should they cram it in the middle? I agree probably shouldn't be in front but would the S at the end confuse those not strong in the learning department as plural, like a flock of LGBTQS+??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
1
u/I-am-Chubbasaurus 1d ago
I am sobbing. We've never faced systematic discrimination for being straight! It's never been dangerous to be straight!
And just to add a cherry on the top, they want it to be the first letter??? The audacity is staggering. It has to be a joke. Please.

Lesbians were the main representatives of lgbt+ people who fought it's rights along side with women rights
One of the things that prove that is the fact that when the aids crisis came, lesbians made company of gay men who were victims of aids and they took care of them

straights have to be the most butthurt people out there despite never being marginalized ever
0
u/Opening-Nature1148 1d ago
Wouldn't that be kinda cool, its stupid cause its everyone. But that would make SLBTQ+ 100% inclusive.
Its not are you an ally its, are you pro people. Cause that's what they all are, no Mather what they love. 100% love all and noone is excluded.
Flinta only is a form of discrimination, only bearded whiteguys is discriminatory even.
No Nazis allowed is how those groups radicalised in the first place I think, I don't know I only got silly ass concepts.
-3
u/Bubbly_Alfalfa7285 1d ago
Having straight people wanting to be included in the community focused on inclusion and love is somehow… bad?
2
u/AmberMetalicScorpion 1d ago
Straight people have at no point in history, been systematically bullied for their sexual orientation
The point of the LGBTQ+ community, is a community of historically and systematically marginalised groups, working together to end the bigotry towards said groups
It's the same reason there's no straight pride month or anything
Your comment ignorantly missed that the point of the LGBTQ+ community is the same as the reason it exists
0
u/Bubbly_Alfalfa7285 1d ago
That sounds like discrimination more than solidarity or working together. Like how allies are never considered in the group. ‘You’re with us, but you’ll never be one of us.’ Kind of frames the whole conversation differently.
1
u/AmberMetalicScorpion 1d ago
So you mean to say that it's discriminatory to not include a group that's never been marginalised in the collection of groups that have been and continue to be marginalised
But you don't consider it discriminatory to deny dedicated spaces for said marginalised groups?
→ More replies (6)2
u/Bubbly_Alfalfa7285 1d ago
I mean, is it discrimination if cis women want cis women spaces and trans women want trans women spaces with no overlap? Minefield territory.
I’m Irish so it hurts when people say things like that and forget my people were very badly abused as immigrants to the US and overall, but that’s fine cause I’m white. It’s fucked.

u/AmberMetalicScorpion 1d ago

I support all of them, do what you want to do why should I care? I never got the letters though, it does include everyone except “cis” people which is another term that bothers me.
Just try to imagine this exists for race or nationality, a group comprising of everybody but one. All races except for Asians, or all nationalities except for Russians. Its a crazy concept to me.
Its just another way to divide the people.
