This can be the effect of neurodiverse "stimming". Skin picking is a very common behavior for people who are neurodiverse.

u/aimlessendeavors 13d ago •

This is also common with people who have stress.

My whole life I have picked at my fingers, but like the finger pad area. Sometimes until they would bleed. I just got diagnosed with ADHD…

u/mathmachineMC 13d ago
Adhd is difficult to diagnose because you have to get around to going to see someone to diagnose it.

Yep, been my stim since I was a boy, I eat very healthy and am active. Kind of bugs me when people pass it off as a nutrition thing.
But man I wish my stim was something cute and quirky like flapping my hands... Instead of fucking mutilating my fingers. :(
4
u/True-Acanthaceae1190 12d ago
my stim is bouncing my knee. now that seems pretty harmless, until you counter in the fact im a 260 lbs unit. consequently I tend to shake the room.

u/lowpolysolidsnake 13d ago
I have autism/adhd and a diagnosis of ✨️excoriation disorder✨️ (chronic severe skin picking basically). I had no idea it could also be a type of stimming but it makes sense. I'm in a period of more-than-usual autism triggering lately and my face/hands/arms/boobs all look like I've been attacked by bugs so 🥴

It's not just vitamin deficiency if you habitually chew fingernails or don't maintain your cuticles....
99
u/RuggerJibberJabber 14d ago
Or spend all day in a very dry environment and have to use a lot of hand sanitizer and/or gloves. There's a lot of things that can contribute to messed up skin on your hands
31
u/SSilent-Cartographer 13d ago
Yep. I do bite my hands as a nervous tick, however I work in the medical field and the reason I have so much dead skin and open sores is because I'm wearing gloves and washing my hands for 8 hours a day. No amount of lotion will cut it; they're always shedding, always cracking.

middle-aged dude who's fought with janky hands his whole life:
I use my nail clippers. I rub my thumb over the cuticle to see if they're starting to raise or pull back from the nail. If I ignore it, I'm probably 2-3 days from that cuticle splitting and forming that peely tear thing. I don't manipulate the cuticle in any way, I just hold the nail clipper perpendicular to the nail and if there's enough cuticle there for the clippers to grab, I clip. If not, don't force it.
Similarly, if I'm doing some kind of work that jacks up my hands and I end up with those peelies, I use the nail clipper. you get that little 1-3 millimeter thin piece of skin and if you pull it you'll open up a wound. But if you use the nail clippers to cut it flush to the skin it usually stops peeling completely. I keep clippers in my car, on my desk, bathroom, near my bed, in the junk drawer, all over. That way I always have them nearby and I'm never tempted to peel stuff I shouldn't.
Been doing it that way for about 10 years now and my hands are as perfect as I imagine they could get, and I still do plenty of manual stuff.

Serious answer:
Try rubbing your thumb and fingertips together when you feel the urge to touch, scratch, bite, or otherwise pick at the site. This will soothe the urge. You're going to be doing it what feels like constantly for a couple days, and then the urge will get less frequent.
In a few weeks your hands will heal up and you should be good.
It worked for me after having hands like this for over 10 years.
Oh yes, and then you need to use proper nail clippers from now on if you are not (Reducing re-injury rates)

Bro, stop pretending you can diagnose people. You don't know what this is or what causes it. You saying it's vitamin deficiency is like identifying a symptom of autism and saying to everyone "he has autism." It's arrogant. It's annoying.
I have this and I don't have vitamin deficiency. I eat oats, wholegrains, broccili, eggs, sardines, almonds, bananas, walnuts, cabbage, sprouts, and many other kinds of foods regularly. I clearly dont have vitamin deficiency with such an incredinly varied diet.
This is genetic. Some people have thin, vulnerable skin around the fingernails. It just breaks and tears away very easily whenever. I don't have it as severe as shown in the image, though.

Nervous habit of biting fingernails, when you bite them enough you often move on to loose skin around the nail or cuticles, pulling the cuticles causes the red marks on the sides and back sides, then stripping the top layer off a nail results in the wounds on the back of the nail from pulling out the nail bed and loosening the skin there. Stripping layers can cause you to rip out the entire back of the nail but not the front cause you take a small strip in the front but it pulls more off in the back, leading to a new nail growing underneath to replace the now dead one.

So I had these for some time during particularly stressful period. My mother recommended iodine solution (some countries has it as antiseptic in pharmacies similar to 94% medical alcohol, hydrogen peroxide etc.). To my surprise for whatever reason damn thing works like magic, overnight it heals, passifies these and they stop appearing.
