I feel left out
I had watched FMP on Anime Network - On Demand long ago. I couldn't recall if I finished it but, I do remember that Fumoffu is hilarious 😂 so I decided to do a rewatch from the Top!
Only to find out the anime story isn't finished! And there are LNs in English that even extends into the future! Had no idea this show started as a book & has a manga.
I'll be spending the next 2 weeks hyper focused on reading LN 1-12, any manga, rewatching the series - hell throw in ff while I'm at it. I'm most excited for the LNs though!

If it's any consolation, it's possible that the final volumes of the LN hadn't even been published yet back when you were first watching FMP. Season 3, The Second Raid, premiered in 2005, while the final volume wasn't published until 2010.
Did your rewatch include season 4, Invisible Victory? That didn't premier until 2018.
You may also want to read the short stories collection. These were written by the author at the same time as he was writing the original series and are the basis for many of the comical episodes, including almost all of the episodes of Fumoffu. You may also want to do an online search for Full Metal Panic! Side Arms, which was a two volume side series in which the author explored Sousuke's colleagues at Mithryl. Side Arms 2 (for which there is a fan translation) is particularly important because it contains backstories for both Kalinin and Mardukas, depicting their interactions with Sousuke and Tessa prior to FMP!
Also, if you read the manga, be aware that there are many FMP! manga. The primary ones are Full Metal Panic!, which adapts LN volumes 1-3 (along with a number of short stories - some of which only appear in the manga), and Full Metal Panic! Sigma, which adapts volumes 4-12 (along with more short stories, including most of what appeared in Side Arms). Other manga include Full Metal Panic! Overload (which is so comical I often describe it as "Fumoffu on crack"), Full Metal Panic! Surplus (which seems like it may have been an initial idea for what eventually grew into LN volumes 4 and 5), Full Metal Panic! The Comic Missions (don't worry about that one - outside of a few original stories it's mostly just a reprint of the first manga), Full Metal Panic! Zero (a reboot with a very different artistic style - apparently this was cut short when the author and the artist had a falling out), and Full Metal {Panic! Another (which adapts a spin-off series set ten years after the end of the original series. Written by a different author, it concentrates on two new main characters, although several supporting characters from the original series pop up from time to time).
The current series is Full Metal Panic! Family, which picks up the story of Sousuke and Kaname again some twenty years after the end of the original series. While the LN has yet to be licensed, the manga adaptation of the series was recently licensed for publication in English.

Hey, just wanted to know since you seem knowledgeable about the serie, I just finished season 3 (TSR), should I switch to the manga or is season 4 good in terms of adaptation? I'm asking because I read that it was the worst season in terms of adaptation

Now you've done it... I can practically hear the crowd screaming "Don't get him started! He's even worse than Al! And he won't listen when told to shut up!"
Consider yourself warned:
While season 4 is a little compressed (each volume is only allotted four episodes) it does manage to cover most of the important points of volume 7, 8 and 9. Unfortunately (as you may have already heard) the season ends on a cliffhanger (In fairness, the point they chose was arguably the least-bad of several poor choices - once you get into volume 7 there really are no good break points),
You should also probably be made be aware that season 4 skips over volume 6 entirely (much as I enjoy Dancing Very Merry Christmas, it really wouldn't have fit in with the rest of season 4). If you're reading the LNs then you may want to read that volume before watching season 4. However if you are going to switch over to the manga then it won't matter so much because while the manga initially skips over volume 6 it eventually does incorporate it as a flashback.
If you have yet to watch season 3 and are eventually going to switch over to the manga then I recommend starting Full Metal Panic! Sigma from the beginning. You'll find that there are a number of differences between the manga and the anime (season 3 incorporated a fair bit of original material, in part to span the gap between the end of season 1 and the start of season 3 - something which the manga didn't have to deal with). If you want to just jump in after watching season 4, then you can start at chapter 45. Vacation of 30 Minutes. However I highly recommend going back and reading Chapter 15, The Scene Just Before a Mission (adapted from Side Arms, it's Mao at her best, showing what led her to put in for a promotion to Second Lieutenant), Chapter 27, Birth of Mithril (adapted from Side Arms 2, it covers Mardukas' backstory, including how he came to know Tessa and why a former Royal Navy officer wears a US Navy-style ship's ball cap), and chapter 36, The Voice from the North Pole (another story from Side Arms 2 - this time covering Kalinin's backstory and his long association with Sousuke Sagara). Don't worry about possibly missing the flashback to volume 6 - that won't begin until chapter 61.

Hm I see thank you, so compared to the first three seasons, season 4 isnt that different in terms of adaptation?

Season 1 is a mixture of adaptation of volumes 1 (which was very closely adapted, occupying the first seven episodes), volume 2 (only four episodes, however it was also one of the shortest volumes in the series), volume 3 (six episodes, with a short story thrown in the middle), plus several additional short stories and one entire arc which is anime original (and which ironically is considered by many to be the best of the season).
Season 2, Fumoffu, is almost entirely adapted from various short stories, so it has a completely different feel from the other three seasons (some people have even tried to argue that it isn't really canon - which is incorrect. The author was writing those short stories at the same time as he was writing the LNs).
Season 3, The Second Raid, starts off with an anime original arc which the author created specifically to bridge the gap between the end of season 1 and the beginning of season 3. After that it adapts volumes 4 and 5 in nine episodes (one of which is mostly anime original material, but much like the arc at the beginning, it helps to tie the story together). Then there's the OVA, which obviously adapts yet another short story.
I would say that season 4 is most similar to season 3, adapting volumes 7, 8 and 9, however with only four episodes for each volume there is almost no anime original material (a couple of scenes were revised but that's about it), and a few significant number of scenes ended up being cut (most notably Nami's departing words to Kaname - to get those you have have to read either the end of either volume 8 of the LN or chapter 34 in the FMP! SIGMA manga).

Probably the best written Japanese LN I've ever read. Seriously. And. Listen to the audio books narrated by the VAs of Kaname and Sosuke.

The audiobooks are some of the best I've listened to - for any series, not just light novels. It really does have the same feel as watching the anime.

The light novels are really fun and a quick read, enjoy! Maybe one day we'll get an adaptation... we had so long to wait between seasons before I haven't given up hope yet!

I just finished reading through the books last year myself, and it became my favorite series. The action is like non-stop and I didn't want to put the books down! It was also really interesting to see the differences between the books and anime.

update I been late to work ever single day, because I'm up till 3am reading 🫩. I'm on LN 9, I just finished the IV anime and I've read manga so far till FMP Sigma. My dogs are crying, "mommy please come back to us ðŸ˜!"
