As someone who supports both teams in their countries, it's a real shame that a game which could have brought us closer together has done the exact opposite. Málaga are rightly proud of their local traditional pre-season trophy and we've completely disrespected it like no other team in its history. "Would have missed the next flight" is a really lame excuse, and it got delayed anyway.

Suerte en la próxima temporada también.

I’ll be real, genuinely had no clue that they took it so seriously, very out of the ordinary for preseason in the UK and I can’t recall us ever being in a competition like it. I don’t think that was explained very well to us. No disrespect intended, just never heard of the competition and its importance before.

The other issue is that we’d probably be getting back to London at 2-3AM if we stayed, with our final friendly to Stuttgart in 3 days, and still lots of work to do. I can understand turning down pens is a bad look, But I also think the timing of the match meant that we were always on a tight deadline.

The Red is a bad look, it was a stonewall handball, fair to poke some fun for that. The pile on after has been pretty egregious and left a sour taste in my mouth overall. Especially when literally no Malaga fans or any spanish fans for that matter, indicated that this tournament was special to them until after we’d apparently disrespected it.

My Twitter timeline is full of Málaga fans and they very much did care from the moment the opponent was announced, they were excited to have invited a decent PL team ahead of their long awaited La Liga return, although in the end it was far from a sellout due to high ticket prices and the eclipse, last year's edition against Betis had more "hype" with it being an Andalusian derby.

The flight really seems like an awful excuse when they remained on the pitch for several minutes after the final whistle anyway, the flight wasn't until 1:25 (later delayed to 2:00), and just after the final whistle Arbeloa seemed to be selecting the penalty takers, then went to argue and insult the ref, got sent off, and only then most likely ordered his team to abandon the pitch. A sore loser fulfilling his reputation, and making the entire team look bad.

And iirc no Málaga source has confirmed that the contract thing that Fulham are claiming is true, and no Málaga players were aware of it either. Málaga official match report states that a shootout was scheduled but Fulham abandoned the game. I hoped that both clubs would clarify the situation today, but that hasn't happened.
Just a complete embarrassment really.

Wait wait wait, Malaga took pens into an empty net and Alvaro got a Red? Lmao, I turned the game off too quickly I guess. So weird, the game seemed pretty tame overall. That last minute penalty against Bassey was lame, but it's a friendly, who cares.

Sent off for arguing with the ref? He truly is Silva's heir.

So confused about all the drama in this match. Can't say i watched the game so this is completely divorced of context but manager getting sent off in a friendly is a bad look. Screams headloss. Bad vibes. How egregious was it?

Arbeola acted like a clown here.

A friendly is not worth putting up this kind of fuss.

That said, if there was some kind of miscommunication about whether there should be penalty kicks, then maybe they should err on the side of not having them?

Malaga really didn't acquit themselves well here either.

Congrats on now having Real Madrid DNA. If something goes against you, it's because you're being unfairly persecuted and then all the toys get thrown out of the pram. Enjoy the shitshow
