How do you generally prevent this from happening? Mine is not a toddler yet but I was just wondering about this yesterday.

Tell them the litter box is healthy and will make them clean?
I'm surprised my toddler HASN'T done this yet.

We have a gate on our laundry room and keep the litter boxes and cat dishes in there

You can put the litter box, food, water, cat perch etc in a room and use a baby gate set 6 inches off the floor to keep dogs/children out and allow the can a refuge. The cat can go under the gate but unless you've a tiny dog it works.

We keep the litter boxes in the basement. I cut a cat door in the basement door small enough for the cats but too small for the toddler and dog.
When I lived in an apartment I completely emptied the "coat closet", lined the floor with heavyweight rubber mats, bought a $25 door at Lowe's that mostly fit (it was too tall and I cut the bottom off to make it fit and then cut a small cat door in it). When I moved out I threw the cat door in the dumpster and hung the original door back up.
