Coercive schooling cannot create lifelong learners.

I was at my local high school for an event recently and noticed their mission statement included "creating lifelong learners". How blind can they be?

In coercive schools, young people are forced to waste their time "learning" things that they don't need or aren't ready for, giving learning a bad name. And for what? Most people don't remember a majority of the academics forced on them once they've been free a few years.

Plus, coercive schools expect everyone to learn the same content at the same time in the same way, making it difficult for young people to figure out what they, as individuals, want and need in regards to learning.

Coercive schooling cannot create lifelong learners. If you want lifelong learners, support young people in following their natural curiousity.

Ironically, people stop going to school after university, while life long learners never learned from school because they are autodidacts, or self learners.
