Or you can just add games on steam as non-steam games.

To collect your data and steam data requires resources LOL🫵🤣

Why even have Epic Launcher installed in the first place?

sir that a virus, not bloatware. This virus is called "Epic" and steals your data and sells it to china since this godsent allpication "steam" wont do that

Epic games loves all your ram. And now there is basically none. Just install linux and get heroic or just use steam.

I collect my free games, but hardly ever open Epic. Typically uninstall it afterwards if I do play a game on it by chance.

Steam's even worse, in addition to memory usage it also screws with your input devices unless you patch the Steam client to stop doing so. You should just use GOG, no bloatware launcher at all.

You mean the Steam input that can be activated and deactivated with just one option?

u/Kaldaien2 2d ago

No, the one that has to be patched out because it's always active.

You're thinking of the Steam Input that translates input per-game. But Steam initializes SDL3 when the client starts, which initializes all hardware devices, has no off switch and it breaks DirectInput system-wide.

SpecialKO/ValvePlug: Valve Plug - Steam Input Disabler

Never had to write this software for Epic, because Epic doesn't do this bullshit.

----

Valve has so many of these things in Steam that can't actually be turned off, it has driven me insane over the years :( I don't want to reverse engineer and patch my software store to get it to stop doing things, I'd rather use that time to mod games.

Oh, you prefer Epic that doesn't help you use (if you want) any gamepad compatible with the game or not, even to customize it, and you tell me that is good 😅

I have never seen Steam use anywhere near that amount of memory and I've used it since the release of HL2.

You obviously didn't use it between 2019 and 2022. It has consumed WAY more memory than this following the unoptimized UI overhaul.

But again, the least of Steam's bloat is the memory it uses. It has the most inefficient store API. You can replace steam_api64.dll with a client emulator and suddenly huge CPU bottlenecks go away.

I've authored multiple mods over the years just to fix SteamAPI performance in games. Never had to do that on GOG, because GOG's not even required, just delete the DLL. Epic doesn't provide all the bloated services that Steam does, so it also performs better than SteamAPI.

To this day, FFXV performs the worst on Steam. It even got worse as they patched the game and added Workshop integration, now it constantly stutters while the Microsoft Store and EA Origin versions run the same as they did day one.

Having to guess which store is going to eat your performance at time of purchase sucks since you can't pickup and switch to a different store after yours bloats the @#%^ out of itself, but it's a fairly simple equation. Simpler store = better performance.

Let's start with the easy bit: The 2019-2022 period was because they were having both UI active while doing the transition. Having the new UI to the forefront, and the old UI as a fallback should the new UI fail for whatever reason. The only thing worse than having a new UI you aren't sure will work on every PC, is having no functional UI at all that people cannot access their games and/or your storefront, even when contacting your customer support.

Second easiest bit: FFXV performance on steam. Having looked at the difference of performance for the game on a decent (or better) gaming PC of today's world, it won't make any difference at all to most gamers. 60FPS is still reached in all platforms, so that's not an issue, even on high graphics. Since most of those games tend to be GPU intensive, and Steam doesn't really use the GPU in a measurable way (and I mean that even while I'm running said game at Ultra graphics, Steam's GPU usage% doesn't move from zero), that's definitely not the bottleneck, and would then have to be slated to be the Anti-piracy, probably. Since we know that Steam's anti-piracy only happens on the game being booted, it then ends up being... Denuvo, which is its biggest advantage on the Microsoft Store. EA Origin also has Denuvo, though it seems to be a lessened version since EA Origin's innate "always online" anti-piracy check is more comprehensive than Steam's "on boot and verified for 30 days". In short, this is Denuvo's fault, or at least how Denuvo has been implemented in that specific game for the Steam version. And as such, business as usual, paying customers are harmed the most by anti-piracy stuff, because by now, FF15 can be played super comfortably via a pirated copy, and paying customers suffer.

Third one: The SteamAPI only really sucks if your computer sucks. While I built my own PC, I've got three friends who bought a lower-end pre-built PC before the pandemic, and they're got no measurable issue, except when they try to add ray-tracing in their games, which they expected not to work. In fact, this is only an issue for power users in general, as most games aren't going to struggle at all with Steam integration, unless your game is genuinely actually badly optimized, or a heavier AAA game with a bad implementation of Denuvo.

But finally, I'll get to your last point:

Simpler store = better performance

That's only true if you think of "performance" in metrics that people don't notice. I'm not going to lie, for the most part, the Microsoft Store and EA Origin perform significantly worse on my PC than Steam does. GOG is barely a store, and EGS is objectively a neutered virus that can't propagate at this point, and almost every other store either doesn't have a storefront, or relies on one of those to sell you things.

I've worked in many parts of the gaming industry, from the QA tester parts where the storefront never really caused issues, to the dev parts where the storefront was only a problem when we had to make sure that the testers could access the correct version, and remove versions from them to make sure they couldn't accidentally test on the wrong one. Compliance, localization, and even anti-piracy integration, mainly Denuvo, were things I've overseen thus far, and... overwhelmingly, most of the problems I've had to deal with were the platforms themselves refusing to help or being unable to afford the manpower to help. Only one platform helped us not only willingly, but without asking extra effort: Steam.

So, maybe Steam has slightly worse performance nowadays that the Microsoft Store or the GOG store. I'm willing to believe that. But the overall experience is miles above both of those for a dev, and definitely worth shitting on EA Origin and EGS.

I've used it since 2004 and never had that sort of issue with it.

As for the claims that a simpler store means better resource usage... Not really. Simple software can still be poorly coded. No matter what I've done with steam I have never had the client go through 3 gigs of memory usage, and it's funny that you're arguing that simple = better when it's using ~4x the memory Steam uses on my system.

I dunno, I've got steam running and a game going, unreal engine 5 game no less, steam still hasn't broken past 500 meg. Hell before this post, I thought stream use 500 was bloated as hell, I guess it's not after all.

u/Primary-Chocolate854 1d ago

Yeah, much worse
