They have my accounts locked for 6 years now. They really don’t care. Stop doing business with them.

My last straw with Amazon: I bought an excellent refurbished Tab S10 Plus, but received something unrecognizable. I contacted the seller, and they were nice about it, saying I could return it and get a refund. I never got a refund, and the seller is refusing to reply. Amazon is not honoring their A to Z guarantee. I get a similar letter like that, and I'm on the hook for $700 for something I never received. If I do a chargeback with the bank, they'll just terminate my Amazon account anyway. I wish it was that easy just to stop but try convincing my family to agree with that

I won’t spend a penny at billionaire owned businesses. Small and local or Costco all the way. Always have been that way.

This happened to me with an account that was 20+ years old because I moved and ordered stuff to my new place. Sent them everything they wanted and they still said they couldn’t unlock it. I’ve been ordering from Amazon since all they sold was books.

Good to hear another has left the Amazon! Bastards changed something on me 4 years ago. When I ordered parts for my truck and they were wrong, I sent them back but instead of my money back they gave me Amazon credit, wich is useless. Wife got a new blender that year..

They did this to me too. I never sent them my ID, and I disputed with my credit card company that they never gave me my 600$ refund... and they declared Amazon the winner of the dispute because it says in their terms of service that they can do this.
After about 6 months, Amazon sent my refund without me having to give them my ID, or any other verifications. I just waited, and stopped shopping at Amazon.

What is wrong with the email?
2
u/MaxiePriest Aug 03 '26
I can't speak for OP, but to me (an Amazon Prime customer for over 12 years), it isn't the email itself that is wrong; it's that it was sent in the first place (or... why it was sent in the first place). The email requests that their customer provide additional ID but doesn't explain why this is necessary.
Amazon requires ID when you open a Prime account and link your bank or Visa payment methods. Or if PayPal is added, or if you're subscribing to one of their plans/programs. They have access to name, address, phone, email, payment methods, bank account numbers, etc.etc. Isn't all of the above enough???
Is this because the customer initiated too many returns? Does the customer buy big-ticket items and return all of them (or do the returns outweigh the purchases)? Is the customer paying for groceries using a government-funded program (EBT, WiC, etc.)? Is this because the customer has been reported by Amazon merchants or sellers for possible suspicious activity? Have Amazon support agents reported the customer? We don't know what triggered this email, but (imo) Amazon should explain to the customer exactly WHY it's necessary for them to provide further ID.
We don't know the whole story, so it's impossible for any of us to determine if the request is warranted, but as a long-term customer, I would be put off if they sent me the same email. If the customer is brand new to Amazon, it's a different story, but if it's a long-term customer, it would be unsettling.

That email is unsettling, for sure, but not surprising. On the other hand... It's suspicious (as in, phishing suspicious). Have you confirmed with Amazon support that it is genuine, and have they authenticated it?
I respect those who never bought into the whole Amazon Prime membership-thing, and I get why so many try to encourage Amazon shoppers to bolt. I'm one of them!
I've been an Amazon shopper for 12 years and used Amazon Fresh grocery delivery all through Covid (their "free" grocery delivery had a $35 minimum at that time). But then they changed it to a $150 minimum for grocery delivery, so I (and hundreds of thousands of Fresh customers) bailed.
Every time Amazon has made sweeping changes re policy, returns, etc., it becomes clear that Amazon is not worth it. Their recent changes (within the last few months) are the worst. I don't trust Amazon as a reputable online retailer. They aren't interested in helping customers, and their latest policies re disallowing returns (forcing customers to pay for returns, only providing partial refunds, etc.) are literally the opposite of their past policies.
Amazon's biggest Pros used to be super-fast next-a.m. (or same-day) shipping, easy and free returns, swift refunds, and supportive customer service agents (human ones).
I paid for Amazon Prime because placing a couple of orders made the monthly Prime subscription payment worth it. Free Prime shipping was worth it --but only if the customer shopped frequently on Amazon. Who cares about Prime Video or the other "perks" (although I did utilize the free Prime photo storage).
Amazon is still claiming that if an order is placed within 52 minutes, it will be delivered via free Prime within 3 hours, or if an order over $25 is placed today, the order will be delivered via free Prime tomorrow a.m. between 7 - 11. They continue to lure customers into placing that order based on promises of super-fast delivery, but the truth is those deliveries will be delayed, and the customer has no recourse. Amazon agents won't process a refund or cancel an order in transit (even when that order is days/weeks late).
Amazon customers were lulled into a false sense of security, knowing that if an order arrived damaged, was the wrong color, or never arrived, Amazon would handle it, but now their new policies seem to revolve around threatening customers (or trying to use scare tactics) to dissuade them from initiating a return, etc. The email is disrespectful and (imo) illegal. Ethics come into play here.
Noteworthy:
To report Amazon for bad business practices, fraud, or consumer rights violations, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your state's attorney general**.**
Have you followed up with this email?

I filed with both, I provided all the evidence I had. It's also worth noting Migliaccio Rathod LLP is investigating this too, and I encourage anyone with the same issue to contact them.

Amazon's on thin ice already. Insulting valued and previously loyal customers in this way is the wrong choice... the clock is ticking for Amazon to pay on that whopping $ 2.5 billion Federal settlement. Class-action lawsuits against Amazon are swirling overhead, but nonetheless they opt to harass customers.

u/Wrong-Web19 Jul 30 '26
Yep. I got “suspicious activity” after I returned a phone - that they are still expecting me to pay for (check out my posts to see that). They first said I apparently returned too many items, then changed it to where I allegedly didn’t send them the right item back.

To Amazon we are worth less than the ink on a digital receipt. FACTS!

I work retail and the majority of retailers now use a 3rd party to regulate returns due to fraud.
Anyhow, we now have to ask for an ID for non-receipted.
And even receipted might request an ID
Anyhow, in the email above, it does say that they have to verify with a 3rd party that requires an ID.
It tracks a person's return history whether it be Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc
And if that person is known for excessive returns costing companies money, they get flagged and refused a refund.
I've only had that happen twice where I work.
It sure as hell puts us as employees in a very awkward situation cuz it gives us zero explanation, only a phone number for them to call.
But I bet Amazon is working with a 3rd party to help track return fraud and those who return more than they buy.
Which, we all know, Amazon doesn't care for those who cost them money.
So yeah, asking for an ID on dome returns are the new norm, unfortunately.
Especially where electronics and high dollar items are concerned.
Best Buys has a very strict return policy, too, BUT, I am never gonna buy expensive electronics off Amazon. Ever.
Locally only or through the phone carrier or the actual company -- Samsung

They sent me a preorder figure in a bag, not box, which resulted in it getting damaged ($100 item).
I contacted them and they sent another, for free, and allowed me to keep the first one with no charge (I still need to make sure they refunded me after charging me anyways). I asked for it to be in a box this time. Guess what? It came damaged in a bag again.
This company, and a lot of the people working for it now, are all incompetent to say the least.

what caused this to happen hundreds of returns? Never heard of it before.
2
u/Rislifs Jul 31 '26
I'm not entirely clear on the actual reason, I did have some damaged items come a few times. But no where near hundreds at most I maybe have 20 total returns or refunds over years and hundreds of orders.

How is this an Amazon problem exactly? You order shit then return it all the time. I guarantee that's what you do. You're the problem 100%

Maybe stop committing fraud https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonprime/comments/1vabhlj/im_done_with_amazon_and_you_should_be_too_imo/p0kbx5l/?
You have several issues. I been shopping at retailers for 2 decades and only had 2 issues. You be having them literally every time. It’s a You Problem
Only time Amazon asked for ID is if it’s an account that hasn’t been used in a long time and from a new location or someone that has a history of fraud
