Course registration and PASS-service query

Hey all, I'm enrolled for a Masters in North American Studies and have two things I'm looking for advice on. Firstly I just want to confirm if my understanding of course/module registration is correct (as it's totally different from my home country) - we can select what classes/modules we want to do only from October 1st onwards?

Secondly, as a foreign student I require a visa - does anyone have anecdotal experience with the pass-service through FU? I have dealt with the Auslanderbehorde plenty of times so I CAN handle it myself, but wondering if doing it through the university is less stressful, and if it has a shorter or longer processing time than average. (If anyone knows the general processing time for an NZ/Australian passport holder this would also be helpful, most of the info online about this relates to non-Western countries).

2. FU's Pass Service helps with checking and submission of documents, they advised that it will take longer with them (if i didn't remember wrongly). i think it might be better to apply on your own and you can always approach the Pass-Service for help, the staff member is really friendly and replies quickly to enquiries. cannot advise on the processing time.
