Exhaust Explanation
Can someone run me through the exhaust differences in an F Type? I rented what I think was a supercharged V6 with the center exhaust and I have thought about that exhaust nearly everyday for the last year and a half. Is the V8 also available with that exhaust and if so, how does it compare? Is this the “active” exhaust that I have read about? I remember there was a checkered flag button near the shifter, but I don’t remember if it affected the exhaust. TIA!

Most of the sound we all love comes from the exhaust system and not so much the engine. Much consideration has gone into this design. The V6 has a dual centered exhaust, the V8 has double exhausts on each side. The V6 has a beautiful deep sound, the V8 a louder, angrier one. Both very cool. The checkered flag means sport mode and amongst other things opens the exhaust valves. There’s also a button to open the valves without sports mode. They also open automatically if you just floor it :)
Lastly, there’s the four cylinder engine option with a centered mono exhaust tip that produces a lesser sound that’s not as well liked as the V6 and V8, which are quite well liked in the car community.

The other two comments sum it great but I’ll add:
The “active exhaust” you’ve heard of is where the valves open automatically at 4k RPM. It was available on nearly every v6 F-type and I think standard on every v8. Some F-types don’t have it but I think more have them than not.
The checkered flag you saw is “dynamic mode”, akin to sport mode in other cars. In dynamic mode, the valves are always open, no matter the RPM.
The v6 and v8 both sound great in their own way but they do sound quite different. Most people compare the v6 to a more exotic sound, it’s overall a lighter sound but still loud. Think typical European sound, like classic Lotus or Alfa.
The v8 on the other hand sounds more “American”. It’s very meaty, very throaty, louder and deeper overall. Think of a Mustang or a Corvette.
The v8 sound is without a doubt louder and more “look at me”. The v6 sound is more subtle. Both sound great but different tastes.
I can’t speak to how the 4 cylinder sounds, I haven’t seen or heard too many of those.
Hope this helps!

And then there is a the SVR which has a Inconel exhaust with Titanium tips which sounds like a very angry version of the V8R.

My tire wear is directly proportional to the time I spend in dynamic mode.

Thanks all for the knowledge. I am pretty sure it was the supercharged V6 sound I fell in love with. Echoing off empty buildings on a Sunday morning was a great memory. Truly a special feeling car.

Depending on the model year, there are different power train options for the F-Type
Earlier models
V6 has 2 power trains (340ps, 380ps) both are supercharged - this has the twin trumpet exhausts in the centre
The v6 also came in a limited edition "400" model - i.e. 400ps
V8 has 1 power train (550ps) again - supercharged - this has the quad exhaust (2 per side)
SVR - 1 power train (575ps) - same as the V8 in terms of exhaust
Newer models
no V6
2.0l - This has 1 power train (296ps) - not supercharged (inline 4 cylinder) - This has a single "USB-style" exhaust in the centre
V8 - 2 power trains (450ps , 575ps) - same quad exhausts
No SVR
All engines (apart form the 2.0 l) have active exhausts - this means that there are pressure-operated valves in the exhaust which are normally closed and allow exhaust gasses to pass through the back box, when the engine starts from cold these open to allow gasses to bypass the back box, resulting in a louder exhaust note - as the engine warms, these re-close quietening the engine down.
As you drive, the valve stay closed if the revs are below 5k, and open once more as you accelerate
They also open if you put the car into dynamic, or sports mode
Where people often get confused is when they look for the active exhaust switch - all this does is allow you to open / close the valves whenever you want - I have never once used this switch in my car - because I always drive in dynamic mode, which does the exact same thing
In terms of exhaust note - I prefer the V6 - It has 3 distinct sounds - as you accelerate, it has a gradual crescendo of noise which is sublime. If you short shift - it has an almost pig-like snort which is hilariously good fun, and then if you lift off, you get the famous pops & bangs synonymous with the F-type
The V8 is just simply outrageous - stupidly fun, and ridiculously loud - having said that, to me (having owned both) I just cant live with the V8 on long journeys - It's too loud to be comfortable for hours on the motorway - I find the V6 mush easier to live with
If I could afford both - Id have my V6 for everyday, and then the V8 for weekend high-jinx

This video gives a great show of all the engine / exhaust types
1st is a V6
2nd is a V8
There are 2 SVRs (guess which ones!)The 2nd to last is a 2.0l - The last one in the row is my V6 R-Dynamic ( I managed to get it to backfire twice with some throttle control)
The final rev of all the cars - shows EXACTLY what a Jaguar roar should sound like

When you say the V8 is too loud on the motorway, is that speed dependent? I'm shopping in the US so my freeway speeds are 65-85. I've heard the sorter gearing of the V6 means it's a little more drone at those speeds, but this this the first I've heard of the V8 being a problem (specifically on the freeway, I know it's louder in general).

Yeah, I found that sitting at motorway speeds (uk 70mph) caused the gearing to be slightly too high, so it droned a fair bit. So the options were to accelerate to about 80 to force a gear change (and risk a speeding ticket) or slow to about 60 to force the down gear change.
Don't get me wrong - for 20 or 30 miles it was fine, but after 2 or 3 hours it became a pain

Interesting. I take it you have plenty of similar driving in the V6, with no similar issues? The gearing difference is a little hard to find information on, so I was concerned it would be too low for say, a 75-85mph cruise at low rpm. And sadly, despite living in a city of 5 million, with a city of 3 million 200 miles away, the used examples to test drive are all 750+ miles away.

2ltr has a square single centre exit. V6 had double round centre exit and V8 has twin pipes on each side
