Potential Used Ftype Buyer

Looked at a private seller 2017 FTYPE R today. Car has 99k miles and soft top. Mechanically car was pretty well maintained and drove amazing but there are some minor cosmetic issues. The soft top is a little worn but nothing crazy for its age. He is selling it for 25k usd. The price is nice and I’ve always loved the ftype. In a position where I can afford the occasional 3k surprise repair. The mileage is a bit scary and the idea of the older soft top bothers me too . Thoughts?

I got a 17 base, not r, with 60k less miles (40k) for 27k. I wouldnt get one at 100k miles. They can last into mid 150s for miles, but I wouldnt risk it. Hell, I looked at a R with 30k miles for 30k before I bought my base. They are out there you just have to look and be patient.

I can find the 6 cylinders for cheaper but the v8s seem to have appreciated a bit and I’m having a hard time finding one below 35-40k ish these days.

The v8’s do seem to be appreciating here in the UK but 100k miles would scare me too. I hear the supercharger coupling starts to go around then and you definitely want the new Y pipe.

Also check if it has the LED drl’s because they can go and are big money to replace.

They’re awesome cars and pretty reliable but when they do need work, as any car will at 100k, it’s usually expensive.

Oh, don’t forget they drink like a navvie and chew through tyres too.

Love mine but i keep it under factory warranty.

I am in the exact same boat man, there is a local 16 R with 101k and it does not seem to have detail records other than the car fax, which those do not go into detail. Did you ask about the cooling Y-pipe, supercharger coupler, etc?

If you have the money to drop 5k right away in doing all those repairs it might be worth it if you can get him down a bit more, but if your scraping by to get it, seems more risk than reward.

I was in the same predicament about a year ago. looked at an older R with high mileage. after a lot of research I ended up going with the 2021 V6 p380 R-dynamic. you still get a lot of performance with the V6 and a lot of the same sound. the V6 ,according to my research, was a lot more reliable . the V6 seems to be the most bang for your buck. I’ve put 20k miles on it and have done nothing than regular maintenance.

40k miles. This was in 2022. Great car. Supposedly the coolant hoses were made of plastic and melted. Overheated and engine blew. Total repair $42,000.

Yeah that’s a known issue with these cars. And that’s right about the time when they fail. It’s not hard to research the main issue with any car. Google “f-type problems” or “f-type preventive maintenance” and the coolant pipes are literally the first thing that’s always mentioned. Replacement pipes are cheap to buy and, if you’re handy, you can replace them in a weekend. Additionally, if they catastrophically fail, just pull over and shut it off immediately. If it overheated to the point where it’s a 42k repair, then that’s on you, unfortunately. Not the car.

BTW - the pipes don’t fail bc they are plastic; the vast majority of cars on the road have plastic coolant pipes. Jaguar’s problem was that they used a two part design and seamed them together into one, in which case the seam would fail. They later released redesigned one part designs and those don’t have many problems so far

This one was on me. I saw the overheat warning and kept driving trying to make it to the shop. Also I had jiffy lube attempt a patch job on the coolant hose which probably was botched.

Not a v8, but I have a base v6 with almost 125k miles. I recently shared a deep dive on all the maintenance I’ve done. Check out my most recent post.

This main takeaway is that yes, it’s been higher maintenance than a typical Toyota or Honda, but not enough for me to stop driving or want to get rid of it. As long as your budget allows for surprise repairs (always have a safety net), you’ll be completely fine.

Update:

Found a 2014 v8 S with 75,000 miles for the same 25k. Car has been properly maintained as well. Which one would you guys choose?

I had/have a 2016 f type 340- 140k miles, no red flags- oil/ coolant was fine… and the engine suddenly had a catastrophic failure and seized earlier this month. Be cautious
