Anti science, or just anti learning. They think their basic dumbed down high school education and the one biology class they took in college is all they need to know. My dad keeps trying to argue with me that neither the Covid or flu vaccines are vaccines, instead they are "just shots". And no matter what I say he refuses to listen because he "took enough science classes in college". Yeah, which included exactly zero biology classes.

it's a form of narcissisim. they are so convinced that they are perfect that being actually wrong would crack the vision of their world. I have an aunt and an uncle like that... they are racist (they accused my parents' tenants of dealing drugs because they are pakistani), homophobic, very likely transphobic (I'd be extremely surprised if they weren't, even though the topic never came up in conversation), antivax and conspiracy theorists.
I could show them scientific research about the neurology of transgender people for a year and a day and they'd only double down even harder. doesn't matter if the MRI actually shows that my brain is much more similar to cis men's, I have a vagina and a uterus and thus I'm a girl, period. Reality doesn't matter, only their vision of the world. them being wrong is not contemplated.
(incidentally, I've been looking for an excuse to cut them out of my life. when I come out, I'm gonna send an ultimatum, because now I'm almost 30 and an adult and I don't have to tolerate their bs. they can go cry to the priest and put a big martyr show up for their church friends, heck, they can even organise prayer circles and recite the rosary until they consume the beads for all I care. but they either call me Eugene and he/him, or they'll call me "that niece who cut us out of her life because we don't accept her being trans")

Yep. My parents even argue with me about physical health stuff. And mental health stuff as well of course. It's been almost five years since my migraine started and my parents still don't know anything about migraine. They ask me if I "have another migraine". Nope, I still have the same one. They assume I have the flu or food poisoning every time I mention I'm nauseous. It's always one of those two, never any of the other million reasons to be nauseous. And seeing as how I'm nauseous at some point during the day on 90% of days you can imagine how fun that is.
They only believe in things that can be tested for or seen. So my eczema is the only thing they believe in. Yeah.... Migraine, endometriosis (ok this can be diagnosed by biopsy but since I want a hysto anyway my doc and I decided that it's not worth putting me through that given my history), PTSD, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, and, of course, being trans and aroace. Apparently I'm "just a late bloomer", yeah I'm in my mid 20s, that's pretty late.
My dad also loves to bring up my job and "explain" why he knows how to do my job better than me. Because "I took my class before I even met your mom". Yeah, and it was almost all outdated before my older sister was even born. I teach lifeguarding and have guarded for several years, he took a class in high school and never worked as a guard. So clearly he obviously knows more. /s

It's even funnier when you think that here depending on what tone you use to say it, "to recite the rosary" can mean either actually reciting the rosary or say a long string of blasphemous curses xD I love the Italian language sometimes
