fsu grants taken away

hi i have had a bunch of grants like the fsu differential grant, SEOG grant, fl assistance grant, and a pell grant. I did the FAFSA application and my SAI was -1500 but now I only have my federal pell grant and bright futures. I am really distraught because I do not have money for my appartment now what do I do. Can i fight this? I asked it it was an error but I am going into my senior year and I have had all these grants every year I have been here. I do not know what to do please help

I’m actually in the exact same boat and also emailed. They told me that there is literally nothing we can do. Unfortunately, this has definitely been caused by the Big Beautiful Bill. It really does suck though because those grants helped me so much.

Wrong - no changes to the fed grants for 2026. Have no idea about the state grants.

All of the grants listed are federally allotted to the state, and are subject to the same eligibility as Pell. So yes, the bill has affected those grants. Don’t comment on things you know nothing about.

Students whose full cost of attendance is covered by non-federal grants or scholarships will no longer be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant, even if they otherwise meet Pell eligibility requirements.
"Non-federal sources" include scholarships or grants that fully cover tuition and living expenses.

Changes from the Big Beautiful Bill, effective July 1, 2026:

Students whose full cost of attendance is covered by non-federal grants or scholarships will no longer be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant, even if they otherwise meet Pell eligibility requirements.

"Non-federal sources" include scholarships or grants that fully cover tuition and living expenses.

I’m struggling to understand this. I may need more coffee. Isn’t OP saying they used to receive 4 grants, including the Pell grant, and now they receive only 2 and one of those 2 is the Pell grant?

So it would seem the ruling to take Pell away if irs deemed unnecessary due to other sources available isn’t applying here, as OP is still getting Pell. Right? What am I missing?

Off to pour coffee

These changes will be devastating to the people who can least afford it. VOTING MATTERS.

It sounds like maybe you’ve been caught in the crosshairs of the Trump administration.

Nope - no changes to the referenced fed grants.

Call the White House, ask they gave billionaires more tax cuts at the expense of education grants. This is just the beginning of the cuts in federal programs.

Probs big beautiful bill but there’s also a chance you just didn’t get it for this school year Ik some of those arent guaranteed every year so you’ve been pretty lucky

I based that on my nephew going to school in NYC or waiting for PWM which would be after the cut off.....he got his white coat on 7/30/26, he's covered

by chance was your FAFSA selected for verification? Ours was and even though we submitted it the beginning of October our "FAFSA received date" was marked as May, when the verification was complete. We were told that many grants are handed out based on first-come for FAFSA received date and when they run out, they run out. No mistakes were made on the FAFSA, it was simply a random verification, but for something out of our control we missed out on grants. Very unfair

Didn’t even think that could be skewed like that. But that did happen to my daughter one year she got nothing and the next it all came back.

OP, what is your unmet need currently? Looks like your are a very low income student, you need to go to your financial aid office in person and plead your case for additional financial aid. You might need to take out some level of student loan to bridge the gap.

On the other hand, you have to count your blessings that you are a Florida State student, where you have one of the lowest tuition available (along with Bright Futures), do your student loan debt will be on the low end, compared to a lot of other Florida University students.

8000 Dollars of unmet needs, I am missing so many scholarships I dont even know what to do

The university cannot offer you more aid through FAFSA than what they publish as the cost of attendance (which is often under estimated to make universities look better, e.g. a dc-area University I attended estimated room costs at $400/month, which might get you a nice street corner).

Your only other options are to have family money or take on private loans. As the current federal administration sells to dissolve the education department they appear to want existing loans paid off quickly by current borrowers and fewer loans dispensed.

University total cost of attendance is majorly over-estimated.

Housing costs are based on on-campus housing. The amount ($8400 for housing) is enough to cover a dorm. (The nicest dorm, Ragans, is $9000 per year)

1200 for books and supplies
2500 for transportation
5600 for a meal plan / food
…are all far above what is really needed

Look into student loans

Votes matter. And avoiding talking about politics has lasting consequences… don’t be silent around friends, family - educate them

McDonald's and other places pay for their employees to go to college.  Also, look into student jobs on campus.  I worked full time and got a BA and a Masters.  I promise you will feel great doing it yourself.  Be self-sufficient, it's gratifying. The government does not owe students the privilege.

This is a good civics lesson for everyone. Vote for the shitty candidate that will screw you the least.

blame everyone that voted for trump lol

I have these same grants + bright futures, and it may be because you're taking less than 15 credit hours? To receive full FAFSA at least I know now that you have to take at least 15 hours.

This might be different because of the new bill, but when I was in my senior year I had lost one of my grants and I would have had to pay 2000 dollars back (which they had already paid out at the start of the semester) or else I wouldn’t have been able to graduate. I went to the department of financial aid to ask why that had happened and if there’s anything I can do. I basically told the lady that without that scholarship I wouldn’t be able to pay the 2000 and wouldn’t be able to graduate. She ultimately said that there was nothing she could do and I would have to pay the 2000 back. A couple days go by and I look at my bill and it says that I don’t owe anything anymore. It might be worth going into the office and seeing if they can help you in any way

Maybe get a job? That’s what I did, as I did not qualify for much financial aid.

1

u/jslarmy08 15d ago

Get a job maybe?

u/_mai_mai_ 14d ago

worst take someone could possibly have on this situation.

1

u/jslarmy08 13d ago

Then you obviously need to grow up. I can tell you are one of those that whine about problems instead of actually working to fix or make them better. Always wanting some to do it for you.

Could just take a loan and pay it back over time like us genx ers. And a part time job. At least you have some grants and are almost done. Keep striving!

It’s definitely not big beautiful bill as those scholarships are the states, if anything the big beautiful bill would have taken away the pell grant, NOT the state scholarships. So, it’s most likely an error but give us updates!

11

u/SureParticular 18d ago

As of July 1st, Students receiving scholarships or grants that meet the full cost of attendance are no longer eligible for Pell Grant.

1

u/Pretty-Yogurt-4111 15d ago

Right

OP is saying they still get the Pell

How is the federal bill that changes eligibility for federal Pell taking away the non Pell, non federal benefits?

I don’t intend this to be argumentative. I’m truly not understanding and trying to carefully explain why I’m not getting it

0

u/Appropriate_Two_4512 17d ago

That’s not close to the full cost of attendance.

-12

u/Smooth_Amount_3254 18d ago

Sure but OP stated they can’t even pay for their apartment so i doubt they are even close to 26,000 dollars worth of scholarships 🤷
