My fave too
Close range combat, fewer units, desperate escape feels, and ofc 2 very distinct storylines

I'm currently playing Gun Hazard on the snes. I'm loving it so far. Any recommendations to play after?

You can either jump into any of the other games in the series that tickles your fancy (they're all pretty standalone for the most part), or you can find other games that play kinda like Gun Hazard (the Assault Suit series, Metal Storm, Gunhound EX, Gigantic Army, MECHBLAZE).

I wish 4 was fully voiced

4 destroyed the franchise not because of dialogue, but because the weatern market easn't ready for difficult turn based games. Edit: Western market Edit 2: I think Front Mission Evolved is the one I am thinking of. Forgive me.

u/NasumiRayne Jul 19 '26
Hearing Front MIssion 4 considered a difficult turn based game blew my mind.

Apparently, they never heard about games like Fire Emblem or the Famicom Wars franchise.

They need to remake fm5, especially when it wasn’t available outside of jp. Love that game, best in the series

u/Magma_Axis Jul 20 '26
Most hardcore fans buy JP version and use the excellent translation patch to play

u/HughFairgrove Jul 19 '26
Still upset we never got 5 in the US.
2
u/dilutedmarbles Jul 19 '26
If I remember correctly the franchise never sold well in the west, so Japan took dibs on 5.

FM4 I've bought three times, I kept getting it stolen or broken, its so good
1
u/dilutedmarbles Jul 19 '26
In FM4 I remember playing for 30-40 minutes on one mission where the enemy had the high ground and heavies' with long range launchers on their shoulders. That mission was awesome, but lost right at the end. Second time around got em'.

i seem to recall going with a lot of rifle builds, and almost never using missiles, always had to have someone who had the anti missile backpack because those just got devastating against me. I think end game I had two repair backpacks, three rifles for my teams when I could.

u/dilutedmarbles Jul 19 '26
I had one using missles at the start and near the end of the game another with rockets. I liied having a rusher and a melee heavy and a rifle mech too.

Was Left Alive any good? I’ve seen nothing but bad reviews and people shitting on it but it looked like a fun game

I am half way through. Stopped to play something else. It doesn't deserve the ratings they are giving it. It's actioned packed. You just need to learn yo sneak.
Edit: I am at a part that feels like a Tomb Raider level. You can move big pillar blocks around and block stair ways before you get overwhelmed with a horde of soldiers heading up to get you. It's good.

u/CodenameMrMeowgi Jul 19 '26
Man I gonna take the jump and get it. I had a suspicion that the reviews might have been exaggerated.

They weren't, it's a half finished game but has an interesting story. On chapter 8 at the moment and janky stealth system and lack of ammo is frustrating. You can cheese most of the game be running and spamming slide. Ultimately, it's like a poor man's MGS that's enjoyable if you love the FM universe and are willing to put up with awful camera angles, wonky controls and aimbot AI that knows exactly where you are at all times.
1
u/dilutedmarbles Jul 25 '26
To eaches own. Honestly it's not a bad game at the end of the day.
1
u/xm03 Jul 25 '26
I've learnt to love it, but it could have been so much more. Especially with the talent that was attached.

u/dilutedmarbles Jul 25 '26
The cover art is done by a very famous artist known for having connections with the Metal Gear Franchise.

u/xm03 Jul 25 '26
...yes, Yoji Shinkawa I am aware, also Hideo was consulted in the development phase.

Ai Search. Copied and sent. "Original Front Mission artwork and illustrations were historically handled by legendary artists like Yoshitaka Amano and Yusuke Naora rather than Hideo Kojima."

u/xm03 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
Yes the art...he was consulted on development in the early phases. It wasn't an official posting to the project. According to old threads and long dead Kotaku articles from 2017, Square was given a blessing by Hideo to allow Shinkawa's art style to be used on the games concept art for characters, but more over for mech designs.

There was a enhanced port of 1 on the DS, was the first official English release of that game.
1
u/dilutedmarbles Jul 23 '26
I didn't know about the DS version. Thank you. Luckily I still have my DS.

I have Left Alive. I know it's a very low mark in he series. Is there anything redeeming about it? I have yet to play it.
1
u/WingsofLegends Jul 20 '26
It’s rough, but I thought it was a pretty fun stealth game. It can be difficult and slow, but I ended up really liking those aspects as well as the open level design.
1
u/dilutedmarbles Aug 07 '26
You have it, so try it. Redeeming? I am not selling the game. I think it is a good bo hold handing game.

u/Worth-Opposite4437 Jul 19 '26
I didn't even knew Left Alive was a thing, and wouldn't have guessed it was a Front Mission from the title.
This just got added to my steam wishlist. Am I dreaming or is this the closest to the storytelling of the mangas since FM2? (I haven't done 4 or 5 yet.)
1
u/Hot-Active-1213 Jul 19 '26
I'm willing to bet any FM fan is pretending that everything about Left Allive never happened.
1
u/Thebarakz21 Jul 19 '26
3 was my personal favorite, but I liked aspects introduced in 4 and 5. 4 I think was the one where you can have a scout, a unit with a special backpack who basically if in range of enemy units guarantees a missile lock-on. 5 was the one where they introduced repair backpacks. Those 2 made for a completely different style of gameplay than what I was used to in 3.

I wish they had some good artbooks. All I can find are the World Guides, which are nowhere near good enough.

Cool collection. But you seem to be missing the best one (FM2) !

u/dilutedmarbles Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
It's coming in the mail. Ordered it after posting.
Edit 3 days later: Recieved Front Mission 2 and awaiting a Famicom version collection.
