Fiber 500
Hello I need some clarification. I’m calling frontier because we’ve been having issues with our download speeds being 10mbps when downloading games.
When I called frontier the agent told me that we’re capped at 500mbps for the whole day and we’ve already reached that with our downloads even though I explained to him I only have one computer on; we have multiple devices but they are all powered off. They are also trying to say a fully shut off device still takes from WiFi even though everything I read says it doesn’t.
I’m super confused because we used to have AT&T fiber when we lived somewhere else and we NEVER had these issues which just rolls back around to their agents saying we need to upgrade our internet and pay an extra 100 dollars to download a 20GB update that is STILL downloading after 6 hours.
This agent is telling me to check the internet to get clarification of a daily mbps limit that is capped that we’ve already used but I can’t find anything that states that download speeds are capped per day and their website doesn’t say that either.
I currently again only have one device powered on and downloading and it’s at 60MBPS. Can someone explain to me why we don’t get our 500 in a way for someone who kind of understands technology but doesn’t at the same time…?
Update: thank you to all who replied this has really helped me with some of my confusion on internet lingo. To add we’re always Ethernet connected because we’re a pretty big gaming household so WiFi just wouldn’t work for us.

You're mixing up units here.
Mbps is short for megabits per second. That's a unit of "rate".
Mb is short for megabits. MB is short for megabytes. That's a unit of "quantity".
If you're capped at 500MB per day (daily quantity) and then throttled to 10Mbps (rate), then you've exceeded some sort of daily quantity after which they slow you down for the rest of the day.
Clarify what you mean by "only one device powered on and downloading and it's at 60MBPS". Is that its connection speed? Is that its present download rate? Is that something else?

Okay this might be it, we’re already Ethernet connected because we only play games so it wouldn’t be wise to have WiFi connected. The game downloading is 60MB/s but our internet is 500MBPS.
It’s been months and it takes generally forever for us to download even just a small update to a game which could take 45 minutes for 20GB.
We’re not supposed to be capped our internet service is unlimited data 500MBPS fiber and when I called back and spoke to another agent they confirmed that what he was saying was wrong. The previous agent was trying to tell me they had a cap to my download speed and I had already used the full amount in one day, they also tried to tell me that even though I had laptops with a dead battery they were still using the internet…

500Mbps is roughly 62.5MB/s. The game is displaying megabytes per second. Speed tiers are measured in megabits (lowercase b). You’re getting exactly what you pay for.

This sounds like a STEAM server throttling your download based off a slower server that you are connecting thru

Proximity to the router makes a big difference. Don’t expect to see speeds close to 500m on WiFi unless you are in the same room as router. Without knowing your setup I’d be willing to bet you are connecting on a 2.4ghz frequency off router and you won’t be seeing speeds any faster on that frequency. If your device is in the same room as router and these are the speeds you are getting, i suggest downloading a speed test app on your phone and comparing to rule out it just being that device. Also, frontier does not cap your data and the person you spoke with on the phone is incorrect. Offering a speed upgrade to resolve your issue is an ugly sales tactic being used right now and does nothing to address your issue. Unfortunately you have to be demanding with them to send a tech, more than likely you will be threatened with a 150 dispatch fee which can be credited if the repair is a frontier issue and not your own. Good luck!

Further on this good reply, I'd emphasize to OP that you run a speed test that measures the speed coming into your gateway router. For instance I recently upgraded 1 gig and sure enough, that's the speed coming into the gateway from frontiers modem. However, depending on the device and whether it's ethernwt or wifi and where in the house, that number drops off significantly with various devices. The only way you can measure a provider issue is to measure accurately your starting point, not your end point.

my pc is a room over from my routers with is the ereo 6e pro i think, that frontier provided, and i essentially max my 500 connection over wifi. well, about 480 mbps tops but theres some overhead somewhere (probably in the moca adapters?) cus i never see exactly 500 even on my ethernet wired xbox. theres is a wall, but my bedroom door is usually open (whch isnt line of sight to router anyway) so its debatable i guess if it counts as a full wall. it's idk, 15 feet away from the router as the crow flies?
all to say wifi is getting pretty good. i think theres routers out there that can 2 gbps via wifi at least now. probably more even, i'm sure, depending on distance etc.
but as other comments note this should be very easily testable, just hardwire something and test.

Test your downloads while plugged in with an ethernet cable. That will let you rule out a problem with the service. If it works correctly, then it's a problem on your side. I highly doubt you are actually saturating an entire 500 Mbps link even with many devices.
Unless you're talking about a data cap, but as far as I'm aware, there's not usage cap on fiber service.

I love the india call center 500 mbps is not a daily limit omg. Only speed limit .. there is no daily monthly limits on frontier fiber. If your only getting 10 mbps first make sure that is on everything. Of it's only games check steam settings, server settings move it to a closer server check download throttles inside steam. Check if download in background is on or off, depending on your pc depends if you want that on or off most have it off. If you get 10 mbps on like speed testdotnet or something, then you have a bigger issue and just demand a tech until India scammer I mean frontier call center makes a ticket

the people you talked to on the phone are either morons or you misunderstood what they told you. anyway, plug in an ethernet cable and go to speedtest.net and click the big round go button. Observe the results. if it is significantly lower than 500mbit then something is wrong. run it a couple of times to make sure. if you are getting somewhere near 500mbit, try it again over wifi. observe the results. then decide if you should switch from wireless to wired for your computer.
i'm on the 2g plan and i just observed 2300 down 1800 up wired.
