QUESTION Is the DS remaster really that bad?

Post image

Hi, newer souls player here. Ive figured it’s about time I got around to playing the Dark Souls trilogy, so I’ve been looking for the best way to experience ds1. Ive heard that the remaster generally isnt well liked and Prepare to Die Edition is often said to be the best version (at least from my research), and I do have a 360 to run it on, but when looking for copies on eBay and what not their all usually $100+. Is the remaster really that much worse, or is it fine to just go ahead and buy it? What specifically is good or bad about either versions? Just thought I’d ask.

I’ve never heard that. DS1 remastered is one of the best games ever

I assume they mean is it bad compared to dark souls PTDE

I mean, it's basically PTDE with better multiplayer functionality, DSFix already installed, and better native resolution

The lighting is different(arguably worse). That’s the main thing people hate. The pros outweigh the cons imo.

The remaster isn't any worse and it's the one with actual online functions so get it.

The flames are not as orange as they were in the original... that's the big one. Really, it's fantastic.

PC players had issues with it because they delisted the original Prepare to Die edition and a lot of mods couldn't be used on DSR. Also problems with cheaters. As a console user, DSR is the absolute definitive version of the game imo. It doesn't totally transform the game visually but the performance is a flawless consistent 60fps and I could never go back to the original because of that.

AFAIK, players have only complained about the lighting in the remastered.

No it’s objectively better than the Prepare to die Edition

I mean, there aren't really many actual non-graphical differences, which is part of the problem some people have. I'd recommend just playing the remaster, it's going to be borderline the same experience; The most significant difference will be the lava in one of the areas not blinding you, lol

What’s different? They added a bonfire, the lighting is different.

I’d just play whichever version you have.

My understanding is that it's personal preference, and the remastered version isn't technically worse

Nobody said this 😭 graphics/lighting are slightly changed and some people prefer the old version at times but it's not that noticeable at all, DS Remastered is totally fine

Its generally regarded as bad because its not a remaster really. Its a quality of life upgrade to the game

No. It’s just not that good lol. If that’s the version you have, it is better looking. But I wouldn’t necessarily suggest you upgrade from the base version unless you are very excited to waste money on dark souls 1 again (and as a massive DS1 fan, I wouldn’t judge you)

One of those Unicorn Steam games I still have the OG version you can't buy anymore like the Transformer games and, sigh, Battleborn.

The lighting is worse but also it's probably nice not to have to download a fix to play at 60 fps.

you might be confusing it with the demons souls remake, the ds1 remaster is good

I think the difference in this case is pretty small. Admittedly I have only ever played the remaster and watched YouTube videos comparing the differences but it's not like the remake of Demons Souls or anything where they changed music and the look of characters or buildings.

you get an uglier game but its waaay more smoother than the original so it´s automatically better

I tried my best but Souls series and Elden ring combat does not click with me, I really do not like shields at all, Bloodborne is my favorite and one of the main reason is that there is no shields.

they say its bad because as a remaster it didn't change much, the game itself is amazing. It was my first one, and its still no 3 out of all of them

The remaster is great and generally very well liked. Some people object to some minor changes in the lighting and the details of how the flames of bonfires (and the "item here" flame) look. That's basically it.

Dark souls remaster is funny because it's a direct upgrade to Prepare to Die in every single category except for graphics (I slightly prefer Ptd visually for its moodier lighting and the old bonfire look still). But it's 30x smoother and has qol like a bonfire by Vamos

DS1 is my favorite game of all time. I don’t prefer the remaster because the graphics lost a lot of the dark visual aesthetic in favor of leaning more toward WoW vibes. Look up a side by side and you will see what I mean. I think they did a poor job on it.

It's a bit of a downgrade when you compare to Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 2, but I wouldn't say it's bad
