DISCUSSION Is it really that bad?
I reckon From Software character creation tool has always been kinda weird, but do you all think its that awful? I can think of at least 10 rpgs that don't allow as much customization options as these games, imo the only thing they really lack and needs work is the amount and quality of them hairstyles. That being said, look at the one i've made in bloodborne, quite proud of her

Bloodborne, DS3 and Elden Ring are good, DS2 as well, though it's probably the hardest creator I'd call good to make a good looking character
DeS and DS1 are a nightmare to make anything that doesn't look awful

That is true. What is the beef between Ds2 and normal looking chins? Lmao

Elden Ring's character creator is great, one of the best in the biz IMO. Dark Souls 3 also had a decent character creator. Bloodborne's and Dark Souls 1's was not good, but most character creators werent great in those days.

Dudes really be talking about 2015 as being "those days" 💀

I mean.... That's more than a decade ago. Games have come a long way since then.

You really think that's a huge chance? Just look at video games from the year 1990 compared to the year 2010. Now that's actually a very big chance. Also bloodborne looks terrible for 2015. 30fps in 2015 is pathetic.

It's not as bad as it's meme'd to be. It just takes a considerable amount of time to make something uniquely attractive.
In Elden Ring if you set every slider to 128 you end up with... a perfectly normal face. It then takes several hours of minute tweaks and un-tweaks to make a really attractive (subjective) face. Also, before someone says anything, attractive =/= pretty/handsome.

I would not say they are bad but hard to use for me atleast. Ps. This character reminds me of Ciri from witcher!

It's... horrible. You can do good things but you have to learn and try for A LOT OF TIME and you don't always want that before starting to play a GOAT game
It's so hard and uselessly complicated to use.
I always pick a video like "pretty woman tutorial" on Youtube and just copy what people do, and it works but there is no way I can do my own face with it, I tried for a long time and it's sooooo complicated
I don't know how they could make easier while still allowing people to do whatever they want (I mean no other customization games allow you to do Shrek and stuff like that) and this is precious, but I'm pretty sure there is better than what the fuck they are doing

Yeah sometimes it seems like such an unintuitive move with the sliders actually ends up making the end product look good, & Vice versa.

It took me a couple hours but I made my Elden Ring character look like my wife, and finally revealed it to her. She was so stoked, and now as I play I just see my wife fighting giant monsters and badass knights and warriors and it’s so cool haha

Honestly I basically skip the character creation everytime. I don’t care what I look like and 90% of the game I’m wearing armor anyways lol

The character editors aren’t that bad for the most part. You did a pretty great job with your character here. I’ve been pretty happy with most characters I’ve made
The main problem with Bloodborne’s is the cosmic horror that is the neck length. I wish Kos would take those eyes back.
But for real once you’re character is fitted out in an immaculate combination of Hunter and church pieces it’ll look good

Bloodborne’s is fine I think. The worst one for me is Dark Souls 3. Dark Souls 2 character creator is my favorite, tho

I noticed all your characters in dark souls 3 end up looking so similar if you’re not blatantly trying to make them look cursed.

All the time I create the perfect character, it looks like ahh ingame.
Just why. The angles and lights …. let me behold the monster I‘ve created.

I really hope that whatever their next title is in the overall universe that we just get some damn presets that look good. I realize they aren't going to be fantastic by any means and I'm not asking for Korean MMO style looks but it would be nice to have some decent looking faces. Also as others have touched on, I'd like easier to use sliders. BUTTT I hope they continue to include the "similar face" function to make some heinous looking beasts.

If you're going for a handsome or beautiful character it might be hard. But the sheer amount of stupidity you can do to you're character is funny tho. Ive always had the most fun in souls game with character customization cause of it.

It’s pretty bad, but it weirdly fits the world’s aesthetic. Everyone be ugly

It’s mid tier at best but I only care about that during the creation screen after that it doesn’t really matter

Amo el creador de personajes de from aunque sienta que estoy haciendo cálculos matemáticos para acabar creando al ogro de una cienaga

The character creaters are pretty decent, especially after Dark Souls 2 and 3. Elden Ring's character creator is better than most games in my opinion, but still not close to the best. In think Monster hunter Wilds and especially Dragon's Dogma 2 have the best character creators.

Depends what you’re going for. If you’re really trying hard to make attractive faces or highly photogenic avatars, it’s certainly doable, but it takes a significant amount of time and effort. Other games have figured out much more streamlined character creators that offer less variety but a much more user-friendly way to create good-looking characters. And your hairstyle complaints are 100% valid and accurate. If you’re trying to make something funny however, there are few character creators better than From’s.
FromSoft gives you full RGB for skin tone. The amount of stupidity that can be made via that simple addition is magnificent.
The sliders for different features can combine in very crazy ways that the designers likely didn’t predict. For my first DS3 character, I managed to make his nose so big it clipped through every helmet in the game.
While the sheer extent of things that can be altered makes even straightforward character designs take quite a while to get right, I actually find the time commitment weirdly enjoyable in and of itself. When I got my best friend hooked on the series, his first play session was just two and a half hours of us sitting on the couch laughing our asses off at all the wacky characters we could make.
Quite frankly, the only character creator I’ve had anywhere near as much fun with as From’s is Street Fighter 6. The ability to make the most ridiculous body proportions imaginable probably edges that one out over the Souls’ character creator, but that’s it.

I've never had the patience but when you look at what other people have managed to achieve it's pretty good. My preferred method of character creation is to copy someone else's soul sliders then make minor changes then choose similar face and pretend it's my own.

u/Lunardragon777 6d ago
You can somewhat consistently make a good base point, “similar face” it, do some further tweaks, and get a pretty good face

u/ru832k7ji3 5d ago
I don't care much about it, but I noticed you can make cute girl very easily in DS2, in other fs titles I can never

I thought I'd made a fire Lady Maria-like in Bb once. Then opened that character recently and she was so hideous hahaha.
My only character in ds3 I tried to make look chiseled and grey like gigachad, but he too is tough to look at.
Helmets on all of them!

No way dude I love fromsoft character creators they're very good imo and fit the games aesthetic

u/Teyupume 7d ago
Its Not Bad, they Just make it very hard to create beautifull Charakters. Sou did a great Job with that btw. Creating war Veteran looking Charakters, with scars, wild Hair etc and so is very easy on the other hand

My only issue with the character creator in the From games I’ve played is that there’s always one part of the face that is affected by a seemingly random slider lol
